This whole thing and sudden timing is bizzare for sure, they have to already have their guy or at least think they have him?
Well here's what I'm certain about...if this drags out more than a week or two, they don't or didn't "have" their guy, and this could turn into a serious sludge fart.

A total mind boggling flop like that, pulling the trigger 3 months late with absolutely no plan and ending up with a lame duck coach would have a far worse effect on the program than if Matta had coached another year and then retired. Which would have at least led to a proper coaching search.

If we can't land a huge fish like Billy Donovan, Gregg Marshall, or Sean Miller (which I think we won't). I think Buzz Williams would actually be a good fit here. It would be an obvious step up from Va Tech to Ohio State. He's a very demanding guy to play for and would provide an instant culture change for our lazy players. Someone mentioned he isn't a proven recruiter but he's going to be able to get better recruits here then he would at Marquette or Va Tech and he won at those places. Maybe Gene got to know him a little bit when we did the aircraft carrier game?

That is kind of where we are all at with this.
Gene is either going to come out of this being The Man or looking like a fucking donkey.
I hope it's the former but I just cannot shed some doubts here
