2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

Just sayin': Maybe he does, why else would be "pull the trigger" now to fire Matta just 90 days after giving him a "vote of confidence"?
It's called the dreaded vote of confidence for a reason.

He should have a replacement in place, especially after he casually let Archie leave the state. Do I think he has it done? Absolutely not. Hopefully he's in the ballpark.

Time for him to earn all of those Andy Geiger fueled A.D. awards.

Tim Shoemaker from 11W:

But Smith has been around the block and it seems likely he's already got a replacement in mind — if not lined up. Smith said Monday he did not anticipate hiring anybody on an interim basis; this is expected to be a splash when announced.

Either way, one of the most successful eras in Ohio State basketball history is officially over. Matta wasn't ready to say if he was done coaching for good, but with his well-documented health issues, it wouldn't be surprising to see him take some time off to try and get healthy. In fact, he said that was goal No. 1, to get healthy.

After 13 years, Matta is no longer the head coach at Ohio State. Smith said his national search will begin immediately — though it probably already started before he and Matta stepped up to that podium Monday afternoon.

Does anyone actually believe that Smith already has a replacement in mind?

Not just in mind but lined up. There is really no other explanation for what went down. If, as noted by others, we're stumbling into a from-scratch coaching search in the middle of Summer, this is an outright disaster.

That Crean is familiar with the B1G, and unemployed, makes me anxious. Lorenzo Romar has shown he can recruit talent, another lottery pick on the way, but he hasn't been able to win. He recently joined Miller's staff at Arizona but I suspect he'd bolt for the head coaching gig. Prying a head coach away from a current job is going to be difficult given the timing, unless it's a guy at a small conference job (Winthrop, Stony Brook, etc.).

I'm hoping Donovan is frustrated with Durant-less OKC and his wife loves Shelley Meyer. Yeah, I know...
