2017 Ohio State Head Men's Basketball Coaching Search

One thing I can't quite get out of my head: it's a crappy time to hire a college coach. But it's a great time to hire an NBA coach.

I don't care if he never wins a game here, hiring Billy Donovan would be epic just to watch Gator nation's collective head explode.

They will lose their shit on a grand scale

If we can't land a huge fish like Billy Donovan, Gregg Marshall, or Sean Miller (which I think we won't). I think Buzz Williams would actually be a good fit here. It would be an obvious step up from Va Tech to Ohio State. He's a very demanding guy to play for and would provide an instant culture change for our lazy players. Someone mentioned he isn't a proven recruiter but he's going to be able to get better recruits here then he would at Marquette or Va Tech and he won at those places. Maybe Gene got to know him a little bit when we did the aircraft carrier game?

Chris Mack and Mick Cronin wouldn't be terrible choices either.
We have players left on the team?

Fred Hoiberg is my guess. I heard a radio interview months ago with an NBA insider saying how the Bulls players liked him, but didn't view him as an NBA guy and the speculation was that he would be let go this year or next. i think he would be a great fit at OSU.

Ohio State is still a very good basketball job

Ohio State should look to make one, and it isn’t crazy to expect one. There’s a lot to like about this job, even with the struggling roster. Jeff Goodman (ESPN Insider) agrees, saying “and it shouldn't be difficult to lure someone with a strong resume.” Gregg Doyel at the Indianapolis Star went even further.

Well I sure hope they're right.

They will lose their [Mark May] on a grand scale

I think I would hear Bianchi's head explode from anywhere in the state and the mushroom cloud would be visible from the ISS. The entertainment value on the hiring alone would be worth losing every game in the 17/18 season.

Thad Matta was choice number 4 or 5. Unless Urban can work some magic with Billy Donovan, this feels like it's going that way, also.

Archie Miller was the no-brainer, but we fumbled that one bad. This is feeling like we're going to get Mack or Holtmann. Neither is a horrible choice, just kind of meh.

I have to hope that Geno has something up his sleeve to justify this crazy June whacking. He has to know...not think, not believe but know...that somebody on the A list wants and will take the job. I pray that we're not walking into a mid-Summer coaching search with nothing but our dicks in our hands.
I'm going with...Gene was motivated by lackluster ticket sales and made the move months after he should have and has no plan in place.
