2018 QB Battle Discussion

Pick a QB and stick with him. Don't be indecisive and play the game of who was better this game it'll just mess with the guys head. It's hard to be a leader when your coach doesn't have your back. Whomever transfers, so be it, I'd still put OSU's depth and talent up against anyone in the nation.

1. Whichever the 3 guys starts, I think Ohio State will be a very good team in 2018. They COULD win a championship.
2. Whichever the 3 guys starts, I think Ohio State will not actually win the championship. (Basically, the odds are on my side.) (Also, unless Ohio State actually DOES win the championship, you can't prove me wrong. If QB-1 starts and they don't win the championship, we won't agree that they would have won with QB-2.)
3. I'm a little worried about the one who transfers. There's a chance Ohio State will get Roethlisberger'd on this one. And by that, I mean that for years when Roethlisberger was playing in Pittsburgh, I heard about how Ohio State missed on a great opportunity with him. While that may have been true, the story isn't nearly as interesting as the headline makes it sound. If QB-1 transfers, then plays well somewhere else and gets drafted, I wish him luck, but I'd grow tired pretty quickly of how Ohio State missed out on him if he becomes the next Drew Brees or Payton Manning.

Just rewatched the spring game and I must say Burrow really did look hands down the best. He was also the better option last year as well but for hurt.

I'll always pick the option that I know what I have over potential though.

Burrow just can do more and doesn't turn it over. Its not like Burrow has a weak arm either because to me it appears stronger then JTs even.

I'm just nervous we won't go with Burrow and he will transfer. We haven't gotten through a year yet with UFM that hasn't required major action by a back up other then maybe 2016 right?

Tate certainly isn't ready yet and him as a back up scares me right now

Both QBs (Haskins/Burrow) have great vision, quick releases and throw accurate balls. They don't hold onto the ball as long as JT did. Joey is the better runner and perhaps the better leader. He is a student of the game and has tremendous touch as a passer. Haskins has a zip to his passes that is hard to find. We will win with either at the helm but I think Joey might be our best option.

In the coaches, I trust.

As with others, I think we win a lot of games with either QB1a or QB1b.

Both have great stories.

Both have put in the work.

Both are Buckeyes.

If either should transfer as a result of having barter opportunities, I’ll root for them every week we don’t play against them.

May the best man win and I’m glad that I’m not making the decision.

Did anyone check out the Nebraska spring game today? If Haskins gets the start and Burrow transfers, he's not going to Nebraska. Too much competition and he's not going to want to go to a team that's in year one of a rebuild. He could find a better fit elsewhere.

They've got a freshman QB from Fresno named Adrian Martinez who is expected to be the future of the program. He probably won't start this year but from what I saw today I'd take him over Martell. They were playing touch and he still ran for two TDs from 20-ish yds out, scampered for another one in close, and threw for a fourth. He's 6' 2", has wheels, and looks to be a better passer than Tate. Definitely no worse.

Martinez was Frost's #1 recruiting target. He recruited his hotshot future QB in his first year on the job. That's something that both Hoke and Harbaugh failed to do at Michigan as did Herman at Texas. Hoke was still starting one of RichRod's QBs in year four. Harbaugh is entering year four and still hasn't found a guy. As far as I know Sam Ehlinger will be the starter at Texas again this year. Frost did a much better job on the QB front than those other guys.

Spot on. The main reason it is a debate is Burrow got injured last year and that allowed Haskins to back up JT and prove himself. I don't think Haskins would have been ahead of him if both were 100%. Burrow is the better QB and fit for the system. Based on what I have seen, I think it would be a mistake for Meyer to not name Burrow the starter, regardless of transfer risk. But yes, it seems the odds of having the backup stay are higher if Burrow is the starter, providing a possible additional benefit of picking JB.

I agree totally. Martinez is a beast, and there's no room on their roster for another QB.

I'll just say I think Burrow's our guy. Period. :urban2: :oh:

We always seem to mention arm strength with Haskins but that's about it...

I think so too... he can just do so much.

He's undoubtedly the better runner, turns the ball over less, equally as good passer, and is the better leader.

It'll work out though. I still am worried about Burrow leaving and never having a shot to have a moment like Dwayne.

Because he has such a limited sample size, and that's his overwhelmingly best quality. But the touch he puts on the ball, and the ability to thread the ball into holes that are NFL quality, is something that OSU hasn't had since maybe Troy Smith. I'm not knocking Burrow, but like has been stated, I'm for either starting but I hope if Burrow were named the starter, the offense doesn't resemble the Barrett-style offense that we've seen of years past, where the QB run is the primary weapon, as opposed to utilizing the legs of Dobbins/Weber and then the arm of the QB. All of this is speculation, of course

Let us not forget that Joe Burrow was 62-3 (touchdowns to intercepts) in HS. Granted that is HS, etc etc but shows he can thread the needle or lead his receivers well. And being at tOSU has helped him improve. If anyone (else) watched the sideline at Spring Game, it appeared to this fan that the players pretty much were equal in congratulating the two QBs when they came off the field. Maybe someone else saw it differently, so I'd like to add that UFM has done a good job of keeping the lid on the "Who do you want at QB" questions from the other players. In otherwords, there hasn't been much if any opinions from the players as to who they'd rather follow into battle. The WRs especially have been mum about who they want throwing the ball their way. This really IS too tight to call. PS, my bet is that the 'second place finisher' will transfer, not just Joe.

SKULL SESSION: QB COMPETITION STRESSES STANLEY JACKSON AND KIRK HERBSTREIT, ELYRIA SUPPORTS TRACY SPRINKLE, AND JEREMY PRUITT RIPS TEAM AND FANS

IT GETS WORSE. It's another day awaiting official word from Urban Meyer on who will start at quarterback against Oregon State. We may not know until the fall, as wars will be waged in comment sections across Buckeye blogs.

Some opinions, however, hold more weight than others—like those of former quarterbacks who weathered similar battles. Enter Stanley Jackson.

From Tim May of The Columbus Dispatch:

“It’s very tough, it’s nerve-wracking,” said Jackson, an analyst locally for WXZX radio and for the Big Ten Network. “There’s a lot of pressure because everything you do is being highly scrutinized.

“The reality is, those guys don’t realize that once you’re named starting quarterback it gets worse. But it is a difficult position to be in, especially when the other guy can play, and you want to be honest about yourself and your position.”

"Once you're named starting quarterback it gets worse," is a helluva sentence to read on a Monday morning. And the words ring true upon reflection of the 2015 season. The debates got worse as the stakes rose.

Kirk Herbstreit notes the game has changed in the era of transfers.

“The first sign of, ‘We’re going to go with this guy instead of you,’ in the old days guys just dug in a little harder,” Herbstreit said. “It didn’t cross your mind to transfer. ... But the last 10 years, this position, and the way recruiting services have changed the game with the notoriety, these guys look at it like college is a pit stop to the NFL. ‘If I’m not gonna start, I’m going somewhere where I can start.’

Well, it's not like any coach in need of a quarterback would turn down Joe Burrow or Dwayne Haskins if they sought to transfer there. There is more at work here than feckless youth and the convenient recruiting services bogeyman.

Herbstreit admits no inside knowledge but suspects Meyer is trying to prolong the race as long as possible in hopes of keeping both men in the fold. If that's the case, he may need to have a chat with Jackson about the perils of a quarterback looking over his shoulder.

I've thought that all along.

I may go with Burrow if he gets a haircut; otherwise I'm on Team Haskins. With the long 'do, black jersey, and silver helmet, Burrow looks too much like Ken Stabler right now.
