#7 Ohio State 82, Iowa 63 (Final)
With which post do you disagree? I agree with what you said above. My only point was that it looks like the boys are starting to gel, whereas when Oden first returned they looked awkward on the court together.
to me the difference is that matta has begun to dictate the game rather than reacting.

todays dispatch has a good article on how cook kept the team in the game answering 3s with 3s and then the substitution of lighty for hunter etc as i mentioned.

My dad and I got tickets to this game and had a great time... was the first game I attended in 4 years and my dad's first game since 1992 (the game where Jim Jackson tipped in a last second miss against scUM) and it was a good one to go to... a few our observations:

* As a team they are the most impressive group of athletes my dad and I have watched. Still making some "freshman mistakes", especially on defense... the first 5-7 minutes of the second half was the worst stretch of the game. Matta called a time out, chewed them out, and they promptly went on a big run to put the game out of reach.

* Oden is a beast (as everyone knows). He looked very dominant and continues to play more and more efficiently with his right hand. Before this game my only complaint was he did not have a good drop-step move in his repertoire (probably because of confidence with his hand)... he had a few good ones and a really great one Saturday.

* Conley is amazingly quick... it's hard to really gauge how quick he is on TV.

* Lighty is the defensive specialist on this team. Every time he was assigned to guard Haluska he pretty much shut him down. Then in the second half when Tyler Smith got hot Matta put Lighty on him and once again shut him down. His defense will continue to get him some good minutes. Once he puts on a bit more muscle I can see him being a Michael Redd type player.

* Cook can flat out shoot... NBA body but mentally isn't quite there yet. He's been playing better defense lately and Saturday night continued that progression.

* I didn't see this mentioned anywhere else in the thread... Matta appeared to be sick during the game... he didn't come out until 1:30 before the game started and was not as involved as he normally is. In fact, in the first half I commented to my dad how involved John Groce (Associate HC) was in the game... he was calling plays, barking orders, etc. The only time Matta was visibly involved with the players was during time outs (I'm sure he was talking with Groce more often but we couldn't tell as we were behind the bench). Also, in the second half the team doctor came over to Matta for a few minutes during the game... an obvious sign he wasn't feeling well. I wonder if he has the same thing Cook had a couple of weeks ago.

* Also saw John Diebler at the game... saw this mentioned in another thread but he'll definitely need to hit the weights once this season is done (which I'm sure he'll work on). Dad saw him play earlier this year and was very impressed with his shooting touch and athleticism.

Overall, we had a great time watching a great team play! (another exclamation to ensure the BP thread quota is met)

nothing there is out of the oridinary, granted the team docs talking to matta. though when i saw it butler was getting checked out, then he got on the bike rode a tad and the docs checked back in. maybe thats what you saw?

Outstanding Oden obliterates

David Briggs

Issue date: 1/22/07 Section: Sports

Ohio State was sliding, their uninspired play allowing an immensely overmatched Iowa team to hang with the big boys.

Enough already, said Greg Oden.

Walking out of a time-out at the 12:40 mark of Saturday's second half with the No. 7 Buckeyes ahead by seven, the typically restrained star displayed a rare fire in passionately addressing his teammates.

It seemed a little more urgent than that to me. In the second half Groce and another assistant stood up and made some gestures for the doc to come down to Matta and the doc was there for a few minutes... it seemed to be more than just how Butler was doing. Granted, this was the first time I saw Matta live in action but he just seemed different. Maybe I read into it a bit much though (wouldn't be the first time I did that).

Matta had a sore back as per this article

* OSU Head Coach Thad Matta has been ailing of late with a bad back. Matta could be seen grimacing during timeouts during the Iowa game last weekend and caught the attention of trainers at time as his back gave him problems. Matta thinks the worst is now over in the flair up of his back.
"It's been knotted up for really a couple of weeks," Matta said.
"I'm trying to get the looseness back. I've had a couple of surgeries so I just have to watch everything I do. It released, but I've just got to watch at all time. It gets a little bit sore now and then but I consider myself a tough guy and I'll play through it"
