All time best "low budget" movies.

I love me some Pi.

$60K

Ugh. That movie makes my brain tumor do the can-can. I once saw a double pack of movies for sale that paired Pi with Requiem for a Dream. Put me on suicide watch if I even consider watching those back to back.

Christopher Nolan played around with some of the tricks he'd use next in "Memento" in his debut film "Following". Wikipedia says $6000.

I thought Memento was fantastic. I haven't seen "Following". Will have to check that out.

While I love Pi, Requiem was so disturbing to me that I haven't watched it again since. That's not to say that I thought it was bad. Just too much to handle.

As for your brain tumor, may I suggest a trephination?

 I watched pi once (immediately after Requiem for a Dream) and Requiem twice.

I can safely say that the first experience (watching them back-to-back) is one of the most disturbing movie-watching experiences I've ever had, and the only way I can think of to beat that would be to add on a Clockwork Orange.

And, I can even more safely say that the school system should drop the D.A.R.E. program and just make kids watch Requiem for a Dream.

Also--no love for Rocky? I thought that was <$1 mil.

i don't how much the movie cost to make, but the straight story is a phenomenal but simple and true story about a man who traveled about 250 miles on a lawnmower to see his ailing, estranged brother. the film was directed by david lynch, and it's unlike anything else that he's produced. i highly recommend that you watch this largely unknown movie, whose lead actor was suffering from terminal cancer during filming. when i saw it in the theater about 10 years ago, i was the only one there. too many don't appreciate movies that don't have exploding cars, supernatural heroes, or over-the-top hijinks. this film best exemplifies one of my shibboleths. if you like the straight story, i will have immediate respect for you.

once was produced for $160k. the irish film is another simple but gripping movie about a couple of struggling musicians. the music, which earned numerous awards, is outstanding and complements the story.

No nudity and no explosions :shake:

But Farnsworth was great in that.:paranoid:

Which reminds me - one of my very favorite nobody-but-me-ever-saw-movies starred Farnsworth. "The Grey Fox" is an early 80s flick and one of the best westerns I've ever seen - at least as far as accurately portraying the west goes. My dad's people were all westerners since the 1840s. My grandfather was born in the 1880s in a log cabin - the family homestead in Bear Lake County, Idaho. The slow pace and lack of action are not for everyone, but it has faultless acting and gorgeous scenery and cinematography. And it reminds me of the old family photos of all of those Idaho and Wyoming ancestors.

I have no idea if it is even available now, but if it comes on you should not miss it. It is based upon the life of Bill Minor, the Gentleman Bandit, who is credited with popularizing the phrase "Hands up!" in his robberies.
