Is there a benefit in preordering asap? Will there be a limited number of preorders or delays if you're not one of the first X to order?

Their will not be enough supply to meet the demand. If you want one at launch, you need to preorder early. Online will probably go immediately, but retailers (Target -confirmed, Best Buy, Sam's Club, Walmart, etc) will all have some sort preorder process beginning tomorrow.

I was thinking about getting the 5 a few months after the initial rush, but since Verizon is going to fuck everyone who had been grandfathered under their unlimited plan, I'll just stay with my 4S for a while...

Ordered mine around 7 EST this morning from apple. Said it would ship in 2 weeks. Tried to click on the "pick up from store after 9/21" option but it didn't seem like that was possible.
