BCS Chances (El Gigante Merge)

FWIW, the economic impact for major sporting events is one reason why cities vie for Super Bowls as well as Olympics. The multiplier effect is significant as $1 that a tourist spends usually gets spent into the local economy again and again. (I will spare the econ and, more importantly, the mathematical details). Here is the projection from the 2003 Fiesta Bowl and the impact on the Tempe/Az economy:

Last year, the Fiesta Bowl, which served as the national title championship game in college football, created 2,500 jobs, generated nearly $10 million in state and local taxes, and produced $71 million in income for Arizonans.
The overall impact of that game totaled $228 million.

That overall impact figures in the multiplier effect. Here is the link where the above quote came from.

I think that a OSU-ND Fiesta Bowl would have a higher impact than the OSU-KSU Fiesta Bowl (estimate from the cited page was $175 million and that included the Insight.Com Bowl too) and it may rival the 2003 numbers. I am confident that the officials in Tempe and AZ are well aware of the multiplier effect and are absolutely drooling at the prospect of OSU-ND.

this thread is exactly why a playoff system will never work.

A. the money aspect. i think it has been shown rather clearly at this point that the amount of money a fan base can bring to the table is every bit as important as whether or not the team has earned the right to play in said bowl. thats not a statement on whether or not tOSU is more deserving than *insert team here*. simply a general statement based on the facts.

B. in various posts in regards to playoff threads and the bcs i have stated that there is no system that will please everyone. to which i have received the reply of "an *insert number of losses greater than or = to 1 team here* team doesn't have the right to complain about not being selected to play in the playoff". while i agree with the statement, it does not alter the fact that the teams that didn't make the cut would be unhappy and would have legitament complaints. think about it. how many posts in this thread alone have been made in an attempt to prove that tOSU is more deserving of a bcs bowl bid than nd or oregon? if we are going to fight this strongly for a bcs bowl bid... imagine the ferver these arguements would have behind them if an nc was on the line...

i think this thread rather clearly illustrates that while the fan base thinks they want a playoff. the fact is, they really don't. while few things would make me happier than tOSU getting a bcs bowl bid. i like everyone else on this board am praying for a nd matchup in the fiesta so we can utterly destroy the domers. i can't help shaking the feeling that college football is broken because deep down inside, we like it that way.

i now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

1. Broadcasting: ABC has to pay for the rights to broadcast, the bigger the anticipated audience the more ABC shells out to the bowl committee.

Thanks. Now the next question would be is are those $ fixed no matter who the teams are? I would guess that 1 of 2 possibilities exist:

1) the Fiesta could sell their product for more NEXT YEAR if they get huge ratings this year.

2) There would be some adjuster that if the game received > X share than ABC would pay X amount.

Typically there is a guaranteed share to the advertisors represented by the network. OSU-ND would guarantee a huge rating and therefore ABC would make a ton of money with the enormous ratings.

If I am ABC I am using a huge club over the Fiesta Bowl Committee to make the OSU ND match.

The gate for this game is what...70,00 seats x $100? $7,000,000

The advertising $'s we are talking about make those numbers look paultry.

A playoff would be easy if they just said we are using the BCS rankings and the top 8 teams go to the playoffs. All of the Bowls would still happen culminating with the NC game in the same bowl that it would have been. First round of the playoffs would be Dec 10, and the second round would be Dec 17 (this year). The 8 teams in the playoffs would play 1 or 2 extra games, but we would have a real NC every year.

Do we even know that OSU makes it to the Fiesta Bowl to choose? As far as I know there is a good chance the Orange Bowl would take OSU and help the Fiesta bowl out of making that choice.

I am all for it, but unfortunately our university presidents are not. If such a system were in place, I think conference championships should be done away with since the season would be long enough. Too bad all those undefeateds had to lose again this year. I was rooting for a big BCS bust...

if USC & LSU loses, they will drop below PSU IMO. And when USC gets screwed, the rules are changed. I don't want to miss the bcs, but perhaps it would bring about some sort of change (naive thinking probably).

USC won't get screwed. If they lose they won't go to the Rose Bowl because of their own doing. A 1 loss PSU should be ranked higher than a 1 loss USC. If VT looks good in the ACC championship game USC could drop below them as well. Even if USC loses and stays #2 in the human polls I think PSU might beat them out for the second spot in the BCS with help from the computers.

what you and I see as logical will be seen as criminal by USC and the nationwide homers in the media. If USC were #2 and missed the big game, serious hell would be raised.

PSU lost to a 4 loss Michigan team. USC will possibly have lost to a 1-loss (probably BCS bound) UCLA team.

Josh, what makes you think UCLA will get a BCS bid with a victory over SC?

No way. USC will be the only Pac 10 team in the BCS.
