Buckeye Defense - 2004 (official thread)

No everett played, but I believe he was the Nickle back. and considering that Nc-State did alot of crazy running plays I don't believe we were in Nickle too often. I think he's fine tho. I just don't think we used him too much cuz of how they was running the ball.

Davis didn't even slide on the play - he fell on his no-talent ass. Pitcock did nothing wrong, and even tried to pull up. It was a terrible call.

Wrong. Pitcock fell on him a full second or more after Davis went down...Pitcock made absolutely no effort to pull back, none whatsoever. He got what he deserved.

D'Andrea has played pretty damn good and was in that QB's face alot, which caused at least that one interception (or contributed). WOW A.J. Hawk has some great hands doesn't he? He had that 2nd interception .. That was an amazing catch . What did you think of our D-line .. improved ?? I thought so , maybe a few tweaks on the cut backs but they are coming along GREAT as a whole on Defense.

I agree, I love to see #5 out there defense he might not get all the tackles Hawk Does, but have you noticed how much they blitz D'Andrea? ALOT they blitz him it seems every other play. So honestly I think they love his ablity for a man his size to run and just nail someone. Also they don't blitz hawk as much probably because he's such a great tackler they don't want to risk anything happening in the open field.

Another point is that with D'Andrea blitzing alot of the time it kind of takes him out of the play so he wouldn't make many tackles anyways.

I agree, D'Andrea was in the QB's face alot last game. As long as he pressures the QB and/or is in the backfield disrupting things I don't care if he is the tackle leader. He's still making alot of contributions. Its good to see him coming along.
A.J. Hawk does more coverage and seems to follows the flow of the plays instead of blitzing, like you said too. He is a great one.

Yeah I believe my favorite player D'Andrea is unfortunatly sacraficing his stats to do the dirty work that no one really sees! but you know its gata be done by someone so it might as well be by someone as talented as mike! Also with him blitzing alot it'll give him alot of opportunities so he'll have his share! The more I watch the Big Ten the more I like our chances boys!

D'Andrea has come along so far from where he was before. I thought he was an unsong hero of that last game. He sure seemed to be in there harrassing the QB all day long. Although our defense has some things to work on overall they did an awesome job.
As for our offense, Justin Zwick is a new QB with little experience and we have a few new guys on the O-line. I still think Justin is going to be a great one when he learns to pick up the defensive coverages, slows the game down, and when our o-line gels. That will happen cuz we have one of the best coaches in the game. WOW when that happens WoooooHooooooo !!!! GO BUCKEYES !!!

Yeah also about Zwick, now that I've seen Randel from VT play against them I feel VERY good about what Zwick was able to do and how he was able to get rid of the ball VERY quickly where as Randel got sacked 10 times..... I was always impressed with his play, although I still would like to see Smith in there some time just as a change of pace. Just only Ross is the one I'm about to go bonkers over.

bukIpower,
This bye week could not of come at a better time. You can bet a million dollars that Coach Tressel is working with that o-line on sustaining blocks and reducing those missed blocks on run plays. Also he has to be working with Lydell Ross on reducing his cuts. Lydell Ross should only be making ONE cut and then GO, at the most, but he makes way too many to date. Given that and with a little more maturity from Justin Zwick and his abilities to read cover defenses and we'll see our offense explode... hopefully that will happen next week. We'll see.

Stormin,

Oh I have no doubt in my mind Tressel is working on the O-line, Zwick and just the basics in general with the Recievers to get more of them involved to get a double threat opposite of Santonio. You know what I bet they're also working on alot is? The Run Defense. I bet they are lining it up in practice and repping the mulitple run styles they'll see in Big Ten play like sweeps, power sets, counters, traps, off tackle, cut backs, and etc........ Atleast I'd hope to think they'd be working on that if you watched Bernstein run the ball against Penn State! (good god). What do you and the rest of you guys think about the Wisconsin game?

I have heard Davis will be back for the OSU game. No matter how they do this year, good or bad, they always bring there "A" game to play OSU. Coach Alvarez always does the best with the talent he gets up there and God almighty he gets some big O-linemen. I think if Justin Zwick gets in there and slows down the game and no mistakes ... We win BIG. If he doesn't then it will be a close one again.
No matter how ya look at it, its a great rivalry !!!

With me Being a young Buckeye Fan I've actually for some reason remembered the Wisconsin games more than any, and that includes Michigan. We either get played tough or lose EVERY TIME. That and knowing they usually flop after they play us pisses me off every time. I honestly look forward to this game more than any. I of course love to see our buckeyes beat michigan, but I can't stand watching Wisconsin on TV, where as I can atleast watch Michigan. This year with it being in Columbus I see it being a "W". I think Justin does have to play a very mistake free game though, however to win.
