Stark duo pick their NFL teams
Tuesday, May 1, 2007

After the long, arduous NFL Draft ended, T.J. Downing and Justin Zwick got their shots. Zwick and Downing, two of the better high school football players from Stark County, went undrafted during the two-day draft over the weekend.

Downing and his agent, Adam Heller from DeBartolo Sports Management, fielded offers from a dozen teams before Downing signed a free-agent contract with Arizona. Downing is one of 20 rookie free agents the Cardinals signed, and one of three guards.

Colts' camp will have Buckeye feel
4 rookies from Ohio State add to team's penchant for selecting players from Big Ten
By Phillip B. Wilson

Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy said his team's penchant for picking Big Ten players in recent NFL drafts isn't the byproduct of an absolute trust in just that conference.

Bill Polian's Big Ten record
Since Bill Polian took over as Colts president in 1998, he has drafted 21 Big Ten players out of 79 picks. Here's the college breakdown by conference schools:
? Ohio State 5 Wisconsin, Michigan 4 Penn State 3 Iowa 2 Purdue, Illinois, Michigan State 1

"I wish I could say it's because the Big Ten develops the smartest, toughest and most interesting players, but that's not the case," he said Friday after the initial rookie camp workout, which included four players from Ohio State.
"Good players come from everywhere. We've just been fortunate and that's how it's fallen. It certainly hasn't been any plan of saying, 'Hey, we're going to take Big Ten guys.' "

There's nothing ludicrous about it. It's a great opportunity for these guys to find out where they stand, make an informed decision and learn what they need to improve upon if they stay.

I have no problem with juniors filing paperwork, my only question is why so many? Guys like Nicol, who I can't imagine would have a draft status other than "undrafted", seem to be wasting their time.

i know that this means absolutely nothing, but doesn't this seem like a ludicrous number? Especially when guys like Rory Nicol are involved.

Ludicrous? You do realize Rory Nicol would start for about 100 other D-1A teams right??

College Football won't last forever, those that think they are good enough need to find out where they stand. If it isn't quite what they thought it would be, then they will probably come back for another year. If not, oh well....

Makes me nervous, although I realize that some of them are just doing it because they can. I hope. :(

Why nervous?? This is why coaches recruit their asses off....

Or is the point of this thread to knock players? That would be unfortunate.

not in the least.

my point was that it doesnt seem to prove much for a guy that plays in an offense that uses him sparingly as a playmaker. I think Rory is a fine tight end, I just don't see him as someone that NFL scouts would look highly upon given that his main job has been blocking. It just seems odd to me that a guy with 16 catches this year would consider early entry.

(please dont mistake this for a knock on Nicol, he was a player that was named in the article so I used him as an example.)

What other emotion do you expect me to feel? Just because I'm nervous doesn't mean that I'd be extremely happy for them all if they declared for the draft and were drafted. I'm a fan who is nervous that we could potentially lose 13 juniors. That wouldn't help our team. :tongue2:

I agree, I just meant that NFL scouts don't exactly flip over guys that have been used primarily as blockers in college when that position is generally a pass reception position in the NFL. I have no problem with them getting the info, i just meant it seemed 'ludicrous' that 13 players were exploring it because that seems like an unusually high number.

I think some of you are getting the wrong idea of what these papers are about. Just because they file the papers does not mean they are thinking about leaving, they do this because it is an opportunity to see where they stand and things they need to work on. Coach Tressel actually encourages players to submit these papers, some of you get bent out of shape over things you shouldnt even be concerned about.

Why would anyone not want the information they will receive by filing? Seems the smart thing for anyone eligible to do.

My sentiments exactly. This information is incredibly helpful- not only will it tell you where you might get drafted (for people who are actually looking at leaving), but it will tell you what you need to improve on if you want to improve that draft prospect. Assuming that everyone on Ohio State's team wants to go on to play in the NFL (a fair assumption I think), why would you not use this incredibly useful, free, no-harm tool?

It would be like passing up a free taste test of a food you think you might really like. You can either try it and like it or not like it and know right there, or you can not try it and not know. Why wouldn't you try it?
