Cavs 06-07 season thread

The only guy on that list that I would take at PG on this team, besides Bibby which I believe we would have to trade fro, would be Steve Blake...

He isnt the greatest defender, but he is just another guy that would stretch the defense for LBJ, and he played a solid pg in Denver this year...

ESPN - 2007 NBA Free Agent List

So who of the unrestricted guys on this list do you think the Cavs should go after? .
I have always liked Steve Blake but I am not sold on his outside shooting. I would like to move Gooden in the off-season for another PF but I have no idea who would be a willing trading partner. If Ferry would have locked up Boozer on a long-term deal rather than taking his word, we would probably be the favorites in the Finals.

Well LBJ gets you shots that make you a better shooter, as they arent contested...

As for trading Gooden, if they can get a PG out of it or a dominant PF out of it I am for it, but who is going to trade a PF better than Drew to get Drew in return, that wouldnt make sense...

As for Boozer he made his bed and now he has to lie in it, and without him we made the finals b4 he did...

I'm personally ok with the make-up of the team as it presently is. I used to think that we need a regular pg to win, but I don't think that anymore. The offense will always run through Lebron, so the need of a traditional pg is really only there when Lebron is on the bench. I'd like to see us shore up Andy and Gibson, and add a quality shooter or backup pg through FA. I think that would be the best plan. When Z comes off the book, then we'll have tougher decisions to make.

I agree, but a PG would allow us to do more offensively, instead of having to depend on LBJ as the Point Forward at times...

AV and Sasha are also restricted FA's, so Cleveland will need to pay them as well. Does that $5 million take that into account?

They can match any offer for AV and Pavs. They will have to go over the luxury tax to do it, but they won't let those guys go although Pavs might be about the only trade bait that they would be willing to let got except for maybe Gooden. The $5 mil is the mid level exception that IIRC every team gets every season regardless of salary cap.

That's true, but I guess I'd rather spend FA trying to get a shooter or another big than going after a pg, whose function is really just going to be bringing the ball up the court and initiating the offense when Lebron isn't in. I think we'll see the offense run through Lebron even more in the coming years simply because his maturity and understanding will increase.

I think a good shooter or a back up center would help this team more than a pg would. I also like having Hughes as our pg because it makes our team so damn big, and that just creates nightmares for opposing teams defensively and offensively.

That wasn't Ferry.

I just looked over the Free Agent link and came up with a goofy thought:
Sign Earl Boykins, Ruben Patterson, and James Posey so the team had a real Cleveland flavor. All kidding aside, I agree with Exhawg the young players will improve. Booby may look like Mark Price with a rich sun tan by this time next year. .

PG is not Hughes position. We have gotten by this year and in the playoffs by playing PG by committee. We need a true PG oh is a much better ball handler and distributor than Hughes. I think Larry made his money playing SG when he was a star in Washington. I do not believe he has attained the same status in Cleveland that he had when he was playing for Washington. We do need a true PG and I think Gibson needs at least another year. You cannot keep riding Lebron. I mean the guy really is only human and cannot keep playing entire games throughout the season and playoffs.

I would package Gooden and someone else for a PG and may be a lesser PF. I think we could slide Sasha down to the 4 at times. I am not saying that he is the answer when he could spell someone. AV can also play a little 4 when Z is in the lineup.

There is no way that Sasha can play the 4 any time unless you plan on the Cavs going with four guards in the game.
Anyway who else can't wait for this damn series to start? Cleveland is finally back in the finals of something. BTW Cleveland in 6.

I know it isn't his regular position, but the Cavs don't really need a true PG to thrive. Having a true PG takes the ball out of Lebron's hands, and that's something we don't need happening. The only way you do that is if we're going to get an elite PG, which won't be happening. I just think Hughes has been good bringing the ball up the court, which is really all we need out of the PG position. Hughes isn't really asked to initiate the offense(except for stretches in which Lebron is out of the game, but those are few and far in-between). I think Gibson, with another full summer, will be able to bring the ball up the court. That's really all we need out of our PG.

Lebron would slide to PF before Sasha would. Sasha can barely guard his own position, let alone a powerforward. He would get eaten alive at the four. Think Damon Jones trying to guard anyone.

I don't know how to tell you this but besides Snow, Sasha is one of the better defensive players on the Cavs roster. You might want to do a little reading on that.
I will agree that he would probably get beat quite a bit at the 4 position on defense but he certainly would create a mismatch offensively and the NBA is all about mismatches.
Lebron is only human. He is not Superman. How long do you want him to play in the NBA? I mean even MJ had someone who started the offense. When Lebron has the ball that is when the Cavs becomes stagnant offensively.

I think he plays in a good defensive philosophy, not sure he is that great a defensive player individually, although he certainly is not worst.

Cavaliers' leaders learned how to win in San Antonio
By MAUREEN FULTON
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

SAN ANTONIO - In November, 2005, as the Cavaliers' new regime opened its first season at home, NBA commissioner David Stern paid a visit. His first impression: Cleveland was "San Antonio-North."

Cavs owner Dan Gilbert made his two main hires Spurs-bred men, and coach Mike Brown and general manager Danny Ferry turned around and hired more Spurs alumni. It wasn't hard

to find successful people, since San Antonio has won three NBA titles in the past eight years.

As the Cavaliers face the Spurs in their first NBA finals, there is no shortage of respect shown to their opponent.
