SOUTH BEND, Indiana (Ticker) - It took Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis only seven games to earn a new contract.
Notre Dame has signed Weis to a new, 10-year deal, the school announced Saturday.
Weis originally had signed a six-year contract through the 2010 season when he was hired last December 12. This new deal takes effect next season and runs through 2015.
"Since the first day I arrived at Notre Dame as head football coach, one of my primary goals was to be able to see this job through to the time my son, Charlie, would graduate from the University of Notre Dame and to stay in this position until I retire," Weis said. "By restructuring this contract, adding an additional five years, this allows me to accomplish that goal."
Weis has led the Fighting Irish, who began the season unranked, to a 5-2 mark and the No. 9 ranking. Notre Dame also nearly upset top-ranked Southern California three weeks ago before coming up just short, 34-31.
"In a very short period of time, Charlie has clearly and impressively demonstrated the ability to take the Notre Dame program where we all want it to go," Notre Dame athletic director Kevin White said. "We're excited that Charlie wanted to extend his commitment to Notre Dame, combined with the University's interest in furthering its relationship with him. All of us are enthusiastic about what the future holds for Notre Dame football with Charlie Weis as our head coach. We're confident that we've got the best coach in America ensconced at his alma mater for the remainder of his career.

can we place a v-bet as to what Weis will weigh when his contract is up?
I wonder what the possible max value is...

In the wake of a report that Charlie Weis' current contract included a comparatively paltry $1.5 million buyout clause if he chose to go elsewhere at any point in the life of the deal, ND athletic officials announced that the first-year coach had signed a new 10-year deal to guide the Irish through the 2015 season.
The agreement replaces the six-year, $12 million deal that Weis signed last December to coach Notre Dame through 2010. Although no details of the new contract were announced, it is believed to have a gross worth of about $23.5 million.
''In a very short period of time, Charlie has clearly and impressively demonstrated the ability to take the Notre Dame program where we all want it to go,'' athletic director Kevin White said. Weis said one of his "primary goals'' was to remain in South Bend until he retires and at least until his son, Charlie Jr., 12, graduates from Notre Dame.

Weis' stock has risen dramatically this fall as he has guided the Irish to an echo-shaking 5-2 record. That mark includes a near-upset of No. 1 USC two weeks ago. With remaining home games against Tennessee, Navy and Syracuse and a Thanksgiving weekend date at Stanford, Weis' first edition could become only the second ND team to play in a Bowl Championship Series game if it wins out. The school would realize close to $14 million from a BCS appearance.
While there has been recurring speculation since last winter that the pro-seasoned Weis has not ''dropped anchor'' in South Bend, that tempest intensified last week when NFL.com reported the existence of the $1.5 million buyout clause in his deal with Notre Dame. Most NFL teams, according to multiple league observers, consider that sum a pittance if it would help land a quality head coach who could get a team into a Super Bowl.
While toiling as an NFL assistant from 1990 to 2004, Weis long stated that his two dream head-coaching jobs would be Notre Dame or the New York Giants. The Giants passed on him in favor of Tom Coughlin in January 2004 to replace Jim Fassel.
