Game Thread Game Five: Penn State 17, Ohio State 10 (Final)

man... i don't know why, but i am starting to get a mid-90s scUM feeling about this game... i don't know... call me crazy, but on paper we should crush them, but the players are spouting off just like Glenn, Boston et al, and trust me when i say that Penn State does not care if they lose every game for the rest of the season; if they beat Ohio State, they had a great year...

shit... i dunno... i'm just getting a really eerie vibe right now... i really hope i'm wrong...
yup... i hate it, but i called it...

this makes TWICE this year that the Ohio State players popped off before a game and twice that they lost...

keep the muzzle on 'em, Coach!!!

sidenote: the nepotism on offense MUST END. period. nepotism has killed Nebraska and scUM, and it will kill us. cut the ties, Tressel.

finally, ding if you will, but you know i am right.

Well I guess it just seems you always like to bash the offensive stats. We are never going to have them so why get so damn worked up about them.
BULL-FUCKING SHIT. there is NO reason that that the offense must be absolutely clueless... conservative is one thing. a 10 IQ is quite another... Ohio State recruits enough talent to be effective on all sides of the ball. this shit is unacceptable.

but we will be in every game we play
nope. this game was OVER the minute the score went to 14-3. absolutely OVER. if NorthfuckingWESTERN can score 29 on Penn State, there is absolutely NO FUCKING REASON that Ohio State cannot score more than TEN FUCKING POINTS. no more excuses. sorry. i'm not buying it.

Can't be perfect every year.
true... but what's the point of pissing away top 5 offensive talent every year simply because you are too blindly loyal to cut the dead weight?

fuck it... bash away. i'm pissed.

Win or loss I always remember this

"For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeteers, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting."

I will admit that PSU was better than I thought, at least on defense. Offensively, we shut them down...their freshmen WR trio were little of a factor. This was their NC game while for some reason we looked flat. They are a very good team, but if last night's game were in The Shoe, we win by two TDs. That being said, they could very well run the table, which was an inconceivable thought at the beginning of the season. And that leads me to my next paragraph...

I, for one, will not be rooting for PSU when they play scUM. scUM has two conference losses already, so they are already out of the conference picture, whereas we need PSU to lose a game to have a shot at the title. Note that I bolded "we need", as in the team and we fans. I hate having scUM win any game, but I always put the needs of our team over anything else. So, if I have to hope they beat PSU, so be it.

Watched the game again since I couldn't sleep.

Troy played like shit, but he was also a victim of poor execution by just about every player on the offense.

Anotnio Pittman is not an every down back. He doesn't seem to be able to take the pounding in these types of games.

Santonio Holmes was playing on one leg.

Ginn is a non factor this season. Period.

Gene Smith needs to take the initiative and tell Coach Tressel that he needs to hire an OC in the off season. If he wants to keep his friend Jim Bollman on staff, fine. He can be the TE coach and Peterson can move to full time O line coach.

No way that Ohio State should have lost this game. The offense and the offensive coaches lost this game. Poor execution can only be blamed on the players once in awhile. It's the coaches job to get them prepared. The Ohio State offense has been well below average for going on four years now.

Did anyone hear the radio broadcast of the game?

I'd like some verification if anyone did.

Over on the other board they are saying that Karsatos made a statement that Tress was telling Troy Smith which receivers to look for on pass plays.

It was also stated that this was due to the fact that Troy can't get through his progressions correctly and was missing the open receivers all night.

If this is true, and I'm not saying it is, but if it's true, then what does this say about Troy's ability to QB this team?

HELL YES this loss hurt. All NC hopes are gone, and it will take a table run and some other stuff to hit a BCS Bowl. Let's keep our heads up and hopefully come January we'll be in a Big Time Bowl Game.

That being said (and I don't even know why this loss isn't killing me as bad as it is), I want to sincerely offer the mega-congrats to Joe Paterno and his team on their win tonight. I don't see how any true fan of CFB could ever be pissed about watching Jo-Pa win a game, even if it's at the expense of thier own, which is what happened to us tonight. THAT guy should forever be the "Poster-Boy" for what CFB is all about. He is without a doubt my "2nd" favorite CFB Coach of all-time. In victory, in his post-game interview, he still showed nothing but the greatest respect for our program. He is beyond an "icon" he is simply a living legend. Let's all rally behind PSU and see them kick the crap out of scUM next week. WHAT THE HELL, they're our last hope at the BIg Ten getting a shot at the NC!! At this point, I'd love to see them run the table and somehow get themselves into the Rose Bowl.

People want to say "the game has passed him by."

Tonite Joe, "Said It Isn't So."

Watched a great interview with JoePa yesterday before the game on the Pittsburgh Fox sports channel. He said some things that threw me a little. When asked "what happened to the PSU program the last few years?", he said that he had lost his desire after the death of his brother. He said he let the program slide because he was struggling with the loss for several years. He basically said he was lost. Amazingly honest and introspective. No "coach-speak". It was quite refreshing and if I needed another reason to respect the man, this interview gave it to me.

As for the loss, I am just as frustrated as everyone else, but I just can't get into all this handwringing that takes place after every buckeye loss. It gets old. Sometimes I wonder if anyone understands what this is all supposed to be about anymore. The predictable "fire him", "bench him", "what the fuck is wrong with him" posts are everywhere, as always. I don't know what's more disappointing sometimes, the loss, or the reaction by so many who for some reason think a loss is some kind of indictment on themselves as fans. They say you learn more from failure than from success. Unfortunately, we learn a lot about some buckeye fans when we lose and what we learn isn't always good.

It's October, and we're still having QB issues? In big games it comes down to execution. Both games we've lost because of one or two critical plays. That's the difference in big games. Now, what do we do from here? We can still win the Big Ten. We'll need a little help, but PSU has some tough away games coming up. It is still doable! Let's go Bucks! :pissed:

Everyone knows that Zwick sees the field better than Smith, Smith is an athlete and thats the only reason why hes in there...

Something has happened with Ginn. He isn't playing the way he played last year for whatever reason. He's east/west now instead of north/south. Something has gotten in his head. Have defenses and special teams coaches really been able to scheme him completely out of the game?

I agree completely. He doesn't seem to be "all there." His concentration and intensity seem to be gone. My own theory is that he's proven he has the speed and tools and just wants to get to the draft without being damaged goods. Who can blame him for that?

I dont think he is just trying to make it to the draft, but if he is I will not tolerate it. You owe it to your teamates, if not yourself to go out there and play hard, and to your full capabilities.

Reggie Bush has proven that he is a first round talent, probably a top ten talent, but he still played against Arizona on a bad leg. Adrian Peterson tried to go against Texas w/ a bad ankle sprain. These players will probably go higher than Ginn in the draft and still they are busting their butts, and potentially risking furthur injury to try and help the team win.

scarletngrey77: "Everyone knows that Zwick sees the field better than Smith, Smith is an athlete and thats the only reason why hes in there..."

Dude, Zwick is awful. As bad as Smith is in the pocket, he's (at worst) as good as Zwick is. When you add in the fact that Smith is mobile and can run, its a no-brainer. Smith is the best QB on this team right now. Period. Zwick has had every opportunity to beat out Smith, and he still hasn't done it.

Stop it. Please. Maybe Ginn is a victim of the fact that we don't have a single QB on the roster who can get him the ball? Ever think of that?

I haven't seen a single play for Ginn this season that allows him to use his speed and explosiveness to make a play. Not a single one. Maybe the coaching staff knows the QB can't get him the ball, so they have to doctor up some ridiculous end-arounds & reverses that get sniffed out instantly.

I think that LV was onto something.

Ted Ginn

Concerning TG. Ted Ginn is trying to live up to expectations that are so high that it is impossible to fulfill them. He is constantly juxtaposed against an image of the world's greatest breakout player. But he doesn't get many opportunities to play the part, and it's not just playcalling. Teams are kicking away from him almost without exception. When he gets a ball otherwise he is more popular than a Playboy Bunny outside a Navy ship that's been six months at sea.

Teddy can't be unaware that he is not living up to the incredibly high expectations, so it wouldn't be surprising if he is frustrated and really dealing with some major personal issues about his performance and role on this team. People in this kind of situation can become very negative members of a team and it is a credit to him that we haven't heard anything like that.

Smack talk

As for LV's comments about the smack talk, that was a hallmark of Cooper teams. Who can forget that ugly second loss to South Carolina, when Buckeye players talked crap on the sideline and acted like it was beneath them to play in that bowl against that team.

When I ran cross-country in high school, there was a gangly kid who was our "team manager". He loved sports but seemed so uncoordinated all the time and never made any team. He asked if he could run with us so many times that we decided to take him on a five mile run and burn him so he would stop. At the end of the fourth mile, we were really dragging from the pace when he said, "you guys don't have to hold back because of me, I think I can go faster". He kicked our butts totally on that run and ended up being the fastest kid on the team almost from the next day!

His success so shattered my perception of myself that I never did overcome it. It is embarrassing to reflect on the fact that the bright light I thought was shining out my ass actually was the headlights of a car named humility that ran right over me!

One of the first things Jim Tressel did was to put a clamp on smack talk and he needs to do it again. We have lost two big games this year. Both times our guys were talking smack.

I'm not concerned because smack is the reason we lost both of these games. Maybe it did give the other team something extra to focus on, but it isn't why we lost. Smack does point to the fact that our players didn't respect Penn State. And that makes me wonder if they were as prepared as they might have been if they thought this team was going to kick their rears.

The question that our team has to ask itself today is, did we want that game last night as badly as they did? And if the answer is no, then they need to ask themselves why and make sure that they want the game next Saturday more than MSU.
