Not to bring up race, but race plays a big part in why Oklahoma snatches up many of the most talented players in the state of Texas. UT was very slow to integrate its football team under Darryl Royal and it continued to feel the effect of this well into the 90's. Barry Switzer, more than anyone, recruited the African American Athlete very well in Texas, and he was well received in the African Amercian community. When I grew up most African Americans were pulling for the dirt burglars in the annual RRS.

During the Switzer era at OU, the University of Texas fell almost completely off the map of national prominence. I will never foget the total beatdown Miami handed UT one year. During this time A&M was able to become the most desirable program for blue chip athletes who wanted to remain in state. A&M always fielded a strong defense with great running backs but never had a semblance of a passing game. This is one reason why most great offensive prospects went out of state.

The three biggest reasons why Texas is back to national prominence are:

1. The creation of the Big 12

2. Mack Brown

3. James Brown/Ricky Williams

The creation of the Big 12 gave big time recruits the chance to play in a conference with powerhouses like Nebraska and Colorado.

Mack Brown, as we all know, is a smooth operator when it comes to recruiting (although he did not land Ricky Williams OOS recruit under Mackovick). He was able to repair alot of the burned bridges in Texas highschools.

When Texas beat Nebraska in the 96 Big 12 championship game it set the stage for many big time recruits to seriously consider Texas before shipping off to Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Ohio St, Penn St. and so on. Watching James Brown, have success on that big stage, and watching Ricky's Heisman run were instrumental in the annual recruiting wars with Oklahoma and other OOS powers.

I played with two big time recruits in highschool, Bertrand Berry and David Boston. UT had zero chance of landing one of these dudes. Joe Paterno and Lou Holtz made a visit to our school to recruit Bert. The whole school was amazed that a "big time" coach was actually at our school. Love him or hate him, Mack Brown has brought that big time feeling back to Texas football.

Yes that stigma still exist in the black community, even a bit after James Brown, People are beginning to accept the situation now that Vince is in the forefront.

Still alot of folks pulling for OU, however.... I Think Last years OU roster had 60 something percent of the kids were from Texas, I think this year its close to 50%. Here's to the changing of the Mentality.

What Texas OOS players do you predict to have an impact on the 10th? For OSU here are those that will have an impact on the game IMO (St = starter)...

Maurice Wells RB - FL
Stan White Jr FB - MD
Albert Dukes (next great WR at OSU) - FL
Rory Nicol TE - PA
Vernon Gholston DL - MI
St - Marcus Green DT - KY
Nader Abdallah DT - LA
Doug Worthington DE - NY
St - Anthony Schlegel LB - TX
St - Ashton Youboty CB - TX
St - Nate Salley FS - FL

Uh, you may want to add:

St - Santonio Holmes WR - FL

I don't think that us Buckeyes have to remind you last time one of our guys was featured on SI*...

Assuming Clarett was the last one anyway, I don't know of any other cover Buckeyes
Actually, when Clarett was on the cover, it was following the Michigan game in '02, and we all know how the next 2 months turned out. The last time a Buckeye was on the cover, it was Krenzel throwing a pass (but the picture contained many Buckeyes) following the Washington win in '03.

For the record, Krenzel was not only the last Buckeye coverboy of SI, but he was the last 3 Buckeye coverboys of SI. Before the Washington cover, he was on the '03 college preview issue (although that might have been a regional cover like it apparently is this year) and he was on the cover, of course, in the issue following the NC game. Then before that (in Nov. '02) was when Clarett was on the cover.

Since last year's Texas-OU game, the SI jinx is no more. They had Adrian Peterson on the cover before the game. All he did was rush for 230 yards.

Either that, or OU is has SI jinx immunity. I'm hoping for the former.

Also, shouldn't there be some clause or bylaw in the SI Jinx Rules and Regulations that states it can only affect players who are on the national cover? As was discussed above, there are 3 different players on 3 different regional covers.

Fuck. I'm grasping at straws here. We're screwed.:(

Agreed!! A good showing against the Bucks and Sooners this year, and I believe we will put alot of those demons to bed.

Wow guys. 13 people out of over 4000 members are coming.... looks like I am gonna have to step up recruiting.
Don't feel bad. I think it's an uphill battle, considering the magnitude of this game. Most people already have their whole schedule set. From massive and tricked out tailgates with family/friends/old college roomates/current roomates/etc to Skull Session and getting their arses into seats plenty of time before ramp.

Not to mention beer everywhere, and enough scarlet to make you think you've died and gone to heaven.

All in all, its going to be one crazy day! Good luck with the efforts though, if I didnt already have several plans you can bet I'd be there!
