Greatest Rock Singer...

I'm going to go on a limb here and nominate one of my personal favorites. Lead singer Tommy Rogers from Between the Buried and Me. If were talking about talent, range, and energy, this guys has it all. I know most people here haven't heard them so I wanted to provide some evidence. Dude goes from low growl to super high notes incredibly well. And I've seen both of these songs live, nailed them. Just give it a listen, you may actually enjoy it.

Check around 3 minutes and towards the end of this first video.

This is personally my favorite song. Vocal range and band energy,as well as the message and direction of this song just floor me. Around 3 minutes again is where the cool, mellow vocals start, but 6:24-6:27 is why I think this guy is one of the best Rock/Metal/Progressive vocalists ever. I would suggest listening to this whole song to get a good feel for this band and what they're about. Please enjoy.

Powerful in a subtle way. Nobody sings a song like Elton John.

You know somebody who can actually really sing very well when he wants to is Kid Rock. I heard him do a clip of Aerosmith and he nailed it. If he wasn't such a dirtbag, he could really be top shelf... then again, it's his dirtbaggery that got him this far.

Another that at least deserves mention: Sting

Saw these guys open for Dream Theater with 3 other bands, and he was my least favorite. It's not to say he wasn't good, but James LaBrie is the man, Mikael ?kerfeldt of Opeth does mostly the same thing but better, and I guess I just prefer Joey Eppard of 3. It's not to say he was bad or anything, but the talent arrayed around him was out of control good.

I can concede your point, especially since I've never listened extensively to Opeth, though I have all of BTBAMs albums. I've seen Rogers nail "Bicycle Race" live and a slew of others, though I've never seen Opeth or Dream Theater live, so I can't say against either of them. They're all very talented to say the least and each brings his own style to the Rock/Metal/Progressive/kickass genre.

I saw Dream Theater at the Newport Music Hall right after Images and Words was released. It was a rather disappointing show. They didn't sound bad or anything, and LaBrie can sure belt out the notes in seven or eight different octaves, but the whole thing was just very mechanical and boring, lacking any showmanship or improv -- like listening to the CD with 1000 other people. They were completely upstaged by their opening act that night, the Galactic Cowboys, who I believe managed two records and were dropped by their label.

Funny thing was, it was history repeating itself from a month or two earlier when I went to the Soul Asylum show (also at the Newport, on St Patricks Day), and they were upstaged by their opening act ... the Goo Goo Dolls.

I saw Dream Theater with Queensryche and Fate's Warning. Thought Dream Theater blew the other two away.. but that was when I was obsessed with John Petrucci, so I was biased.

I thought Labrie was pretty lame as a front man. He hit the notes, but acted like he did not want to be there.

May 23, Newport. I'll be at least drunk, and there.

I should've thrown Akerfeldt's name into my post. As far as talent goes, I'm not sure anyone has anything on him. He has a great voice to go along with his growl, and can play some of the most complicated stuff I've ever heard while singing/growling. Insane.

I prefer an different style of metal. I have listened to Opeth before and they are definitely talented, just not to the intensity as I have with BTBAM. I knew I'd catch some shit from you, I just can't objectively compare the singers when I've heard Tommy Rogers from the beginning. I have respect for the guy because of how far he's come. Opeth and BTBAM are just different styles in the closely related genre. Different time periods really too, which plays to a difference in musical styles. The revolving door of Opeth members I find interesting. We could field a god damn football team with all of em.
