LB Coach James Laurinaitis (2x B1G DPOY, 2006 Nagurski, 2007 Butkus, 2008 Lott, 3x All-American, OSU HOF)

I think too many are looking too far into this.

This was his second year coaching and btw his unit struggled the most this past season. That is in the face of returning both Tommy and Steele.

I love James and maybe he’d be a long term asset here but for this one season? We need the best teacher possible for the LBs. I’m not sure that’s James…

If he was smart he’d agree to be an analyst one more season while we bring in another full time defensive coach. Then next year when LJ retires we should bring him in full time

Race aside, it’s clear that JL is not, and has never been, a priority hire for Day.
He had an opportunity to hire JL before he went to the Domers, then last year, and again this year. There’s a position open, yet Day is looking around at different people and positions.
I have no problem with this. Just because someone was a good player at OSU it doesn’t necessarily mean that he’ll be a good coach. Maybe JL isn’t ready…. If that’s the case, I say go find the best option out there.

The only down side is the lack of a transfer of power plan for Larry Johnson. Not sure how that gets addressed outside of him finally retiring.
This was definitely a cross that path when it comes type of thing. LJ will need addressed for sure.

May they want to see how his son is, and they can always give LJ some sort of non coach position, while hiring a new DL coach down the road.

Just sayin': Now with his son Tony working at Ohio State too he might want to stick around as a coach a year or 2 longer......
