Minnesota Golden Gophers (official thread)

On par? based on what exactly? QB play alone should have Neb and Penn a notch above
Talking about in the 2014 and 2015 season. I don't see how calling Minny 5th best in the league is far fetched at all. Last year Minny finished 4th in the league. Tied Nebraska but had the head to head win for the tie breaker. Ped finished 2-6 in conference. The only conference foes they beat were Rutgers and Indiana. Even if you take the eye test, last year pedsters were aweful. Great defense, incompetent offense. Don't let that they took OSU to OT sway your opinion. Watch the rest of their games, they couldn't score on some of the worst defenses in the league.

This year, I expect Minny to be better, Penn State to be better as well and Nebraska to be the same at worse. I can't see Minny dropping anywhere below 6th and I personally expect them to finish 5th. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Minny beats Nebraska again. Heck, they could get to Indy if Wisky has a bad transition year. I'll call that on par with pedsters and nebby over this two season span. Which if I'm saying it in regards to the two games against TCU, then I don't really care what they do in 2014 or 2016. In all likelihood they will fall back to around 7th in the league in the long run, but when 3 traditional powers are fighting for scraps, 4th and 5th happens.

I just think the Gophers lost too much but we shall see! I think Nebraska gets better for sure, Penn St not sure, and so far Minnys D has looked impressive I just don't trust that QB at all! Hoping they can continue their success but this may be a rebuilding year after losing their top rusher and catcher.

Maybe 7th in name. But frankly minny in 2014/15 is better than ttun and is on par with nebraska and ped state. That's why I say 5th. They could finish between 4th and 6th.

I wouldn't expect it. They lost their only guys on offense (Cobb and Maxx) and still have an awful QB. Thursday proved Cobb's replacement isn't up to snuff... whereas I've seen enough of Gordon's replacement to know Wisconsin will be fine. I'm on the fence w/Nebraska after they lost Pierson-El to injury, but with Pierson they'd be solidly ahead too. All 3 should field decent defenses... though you never know... black shirts have underperformed since joining.
Unfortunately CultState is probably on the rise. Hackeysack is over-rated but still a much better QB than anyone in the West has, and their Defense is legit.
scUM is very comparable to Minnesota right now. Shit QB. Shit skill players. Solid on defense. Harbaugh still has talent advantage and should be expected to get them better, whereas Minny... feels like this is their ceiling. Minny's offense isn't going to get much better... their D will have to carry the load if they want to be the 6th best team in the conference.

While that's true for the rest of the country (including one half of the Big) ... the West Division seems set to remain centered on RBs and Defense.
Maybe it's the weather, maybe it's the mid-level recruiting situation where developing 3star guys is key... I don't know. But their offenses are going to revolve around 1 or 2 skill guys, road graders on the OLine, praying they can find a game-manager at QB, and focusing on good team fundamentals on the defense (where they'll show well nationally -- ie even TCU struggled offensively against Minny).
When one of them can occasionally find a QB they'll have a good shot of vaulting their division rivals, but it doesn't seem like that will happen often. The QBs are god awful over there. Rudock would be an improvement for Minnesota and Wisconsin. Not sold that Ferentz will field a better QB this year either. Armstrong is something of a playmaker but can be wildly inconsistent.

edited cuz I somehow put Stave instead of Rudock

Watching ped state, and ummm they aren't on the rise. They look like just as much of a piece of shit as ever. Other than that, I can agree. Nebraska looking better, and I think they will do better in the long run without Pelini. Something about a coach that isn't screaming in your face seems to make Armstrong look more confident.
Minny is at their ceiling at #4 in the conference, but I think they stick around at 4/5 this year. TTUN may catch up, but it won't be this year. Ped state, I thought would overtake them, but watching the Temple game I don't think so. Even if they pull out the win, ped looks like shit.

Yea I apologize for buying into cult hype  I accept whatever penance the board deems necessary.
Even their run defense looked suspect... the one thing they were good at last year.
I take back what I said about Hackeysack being a better QB than anyone in the West too... my god he's terrible. Need to see him against a defense that remembers how to play S̶t̶a̶n̶f̶o̶r̶d̶ B1G Football(tm), but that Northwestern kid could be decent.

The one thing that can save them is franklins recruiting better than they have in a long time. But without some new coaches they will never be a top 5 team in the big. I mean by sack #8 Franklin should have walked over to the o line coach and tell him he better leave now. Also the qb coach should be getting his resume ready. Hackensack actually looks worse then when he was in high school.
