Mitchell Report Fantasy Draft

As a Mets fan, I feel I must say something in their defense here. Their key witness was a Mets clubhouse attendant, of course they'll be mentioned the most. (I'm just glad Piazza wasn't on the list cause he really means something to most Met fans.) I'm sure there are plenty other distribution circles you could look into that would put different team names at the top.

I just like to bust on Steve Phillips b/c he is always making dumb statements and acting like he knows what he's talking about.

He also pretended to be about 7 different GM's in the worst idea ever created by ESPN

He also publicly whores himself out every time anything "GM" comes up in an effort to promote himself even though he did a very mediocre job in NY and left under scrutiny b/c of an affair he was having

But you are definately right. Just b/c this report omits Sammy doesn't mean he wasn't using. Plenty of clubhouse workers/trainers/anybody that's ever been to a gym has the ability to get illegal drugs.

This report was much milder than I thought it would be.

Maybe that's why Selig hasn't bothered to read the whole thing yet?

I certainly wouldn't read 300+ pages on why steroids are prevalent in baseball and how they could have a negative impact on the youth.

Did anything really important happen today at all? Athletes use roids' and Donald Fehr is an asshole.

Did I cover everything?

Well, I'd note that the Commissioner of MLB might be a tad more interested in reading the treatise on his own sport. Especially when he commissioned the thing.

I don't know how many Mets fans you know, but Steve Phillips isn't someone we tend to defend.

sure he'll read it, but honestly what good is going to come of all this? More steroids awareness is about all I suppose. They can't even test for HGH so as long as you have a connect that isn't utilized by 20 other players or through the internet, you should be pretty safe until a test comes out.

Really, what is Selig's responsibility in this? I'm not defending him, but I bet at least 5-7% of football players, NBA players, hockey players, etc., are using HGH as well. Until any leagues go Olympic style testing it can't be avoided and even then its a limited deterent to these guys.

My point is simple.... this is the "biggest news in baseball" in a long time... a friggin comprehensive report about HIS sport... he commissioned it.. He's had the report for 2 full days, knowing damn well he'd have to comment on it... and he can't read the whole thing?

Ludicrous.

ok. I'll agree with that. Didn't realize thats the point you were making. Obviously, whether he's read it or not, he's going to say he hasn't b/c it allows him to avoid answering direct questions.

I like the fact that guys are getting caught using roids' and I hope records Bonds and Clemens set are joined w/ a big asterick but in the long run, this really accomplishes very little.

I disagree on the tactic of saying he didn't read it to avoid the answering of tough questions, but that's not a "baseball problem" Just Selig being none to swift on his feet, I guess.

I don't care about asterisks and all that... frankly, roids don't much bother me either... though that's no an endorsement. Anyway, I'd agree it accomplishes little. But, if played correctly, it could win back some fans who went away after the last strike, or whenever else for whatever reason.

And... while I'm posting, I need to say

Fuck Sammy Fucking Sosa. I hope he gets castrated by a peacock and thrown in a lake.

i don't think they have to feel obligated to get old fans back, they set attendance records yet again last year. Football has surpassed baseball in popularity, but that is b/c football is much more entertaining. I just think baseball has become the poster boy b/c Barry got caught up and was setting records. Then we find out Big Mac was cheating and we followed his chase so carefully and feel slighted.

It's just easier to associate roids' with a sport like baseball b/c the numbers are easier to disect in accordance with roids'.

I do think Selig played dumb on the report to avoid questions. I remember hearing his commission had several days to read it but he had not. At the very least he was briefed. I think in his position, you just play dumb and any tough questions you get, you just say I haven't read the report yet and need more info (as Donald Fegr did).

Well, the other thing about baseball is that it's fans are huge stats guys. I mean, everyone knows the big numbers... the 5,714 Ks.... the 755HRs :wink2: the 511 wins.. and so on... they mean a great deal to baseball fans. Football fans... well, while stats are used to prove points, I'm hard pressed to find someone who knows Walter Payton's career yardage off the top of their head, etc... That's not to say numbers are ignored, just I don't think they're quite as important.... Plus Baseball in 1900 is essentially the same as 2000... football in 1900 was entirely different... so..

i think it's interesting that football is King right now and easily the most popular sports in America, yet attendance records were set in baseball last year. It speaks more to the popularity of football than the lack of interest in baseball b/c of steroids.

I think steroids have had such an impact b/c of the stats you speak of. You can attribute the use of steroids to record numbers much easier in baseball than any other sport.

Living in the Northeast, I'll tell you that football is a distant second around here. This is baseball country. Sports talk radio talks Mets and Yankees 24-7. Even the day after a big Jets or Giants game, all you hear is Hot Stove. If the Pats weren't undefeated, I'm sure it would be the same in Boston. It's probably the same way in St. Louis and maybe even Detroit.

I think fantasy football has brough a lot more casual fans to football than baseball could ever have because of the watchability of the sport to the casual observer. Outside of that, I think you have to go city by city to determine what is king. Los Angelans will tell you basketball is king as I'm guessing people from Miami will too.
