OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma reinstated defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek, who was kicked off the team in September after being involved in a bar fight.

Since his dismissal, Dvoracek has undergone anger-management and alcohol-related counseling.

Oklahoma applied for a medical hardship waiver to allow the senior to play another year. The waiver was denied by the Big 12 Conference but the school appealed to the NCAA, which granted Dvoracek a year of eligibility.

"When Dusty was removed from the team he looked for ways to overcome the difficulties he was having," Stoops said in a statement Thursday. "A number of outstanding people worked with him for several months and continue to now. I am satisfied, as are they, that he has earned another opportunity with our program."

Dvoracek got into a fight at a Norman bar in which one of his high-school friends, Matt Wilde, suffered a head injury and spent several days in Norman Regional Hospital.

Police said Wilde's family did not want to pursue charges, and Dvoracek was never arrested or charged.

Dvoracek, from Lake Dallas, Texas, was a third-team All-American in 2003.

"I squandered an opportunity to be on a great football team last fall and embarrassed a number of people including myself," Dvoracek said. "It was a hard lesson to learn, but I learned it."

Stoops said Dvoracek's actions will be scrutinized.

"The people at OU held me to a high standard before I was considered for a return and I recognize that nobody was required to do this for me," Dvoracek said. "I want to show them that their trust in me is deserved."

OU does not exactly operate on a hair-trigger in terms of kicking guys off the team. You have to have a record of misconduct, which they're pretty good at keeping under wraps, before they boot you. Especially if you're an All-American.

Dvoracek's offenses -- there were several -- were scary bad. Near death experiences for a couple of his 'friends'. I hope he will continue the counseling he has been receiving and that his problems are behind him. But the clinical experience is that his kind of violent rage is very hard to erase from your hard drive.

so if you get suspended for a year just start drinking and apply for a medical hardship. how fucking stupid is that?

marcus vick should become an alcoholic and get last year back.........oh wait, step one is probably already accomplished :lol:

I always likend the Dvoracek suspension to that of Slash getting kicked out of Guns n Roses.

Like Dennis Miller said, WTF do you have to do to get kicked out of GNR? Same applies to getting booted from OU.

I think he shoots for sex-addict as the next step in his development. Get a recurring case of the clap from a friendly lady of the night -- then apply for his med hardship.

Why does OU get so many unbelievable breaks on eligibility?

We'll never know for sure how inebriated Dusty Dvoracek might have been.

His situation to this point has been painted over with code words like "alcohol-related" and "rehabilitation". There are few, if any, formal charges but lots of reported allegations involving drinking and violence. When Oklahoma's star defensive lineman was kicked off the team in September, Bob Stoops called Dvoracek's conduct "a pattern of behavior."
<table align="left" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="150"><tbody><tr><td width="150">

</td><td width="15">
</td></tr><tr><td width="150">

(Getty Images)

</td><td width="15">
</td></tr></tbody></table>Those are labels that only hint at the depths of his problems.

But one way or another, all of it is over -- either Dvoracek's off-field conduct or his career. The NCAA already has granted him what many consider a precedent-setting mulligan -- a medical redshirt granted after he underwent alcohol abuse counseling.

With a college and NFL career to consider, he can't screw up again.

"Dusty can't drink," says Jim Riley, the man who treated him. "He gets caught drinking, it's over. He's automatically suspended. He can't even sit down and have a beer. He can't drink that way anyway, so it doesn't make any difference."

Jim Riley, 59, is candid because life hasn't pulled any punches with him. So why should he? Riley doesn't hide behind privacy concerns or code words. Riley played six seasons in the NFL, was a member of the 1972 undefeated Miami Dolphins. He was an alcoholic for probably triple that amount of time. And worse.

Some members of that '72 Dolphins team made it a habit to share a bottle of champagne each year the last undefeated NFL team lost a game. Not Riley. He was way beyond that.

"I even started doing cocaine," he said. "I was out of control."

Twenty years ago he took the cure, agreeing to enter himself into rehab. Sixteen years ago his 19-year old son Blake stared him in the eye and said, "I promise you I'll never touch a drop of alcohol as long as I
live, as long as you don't."

Then a couple of months later, Blake was dead in a car crash, the only fatality in car filled with three other friends traveling back from an Oklahoma football game. The promise was fulfilled, but way too early.

So when it comes to the cold, hard truth, Riley doesn't flinch. His Jim Riley Outreach ministry started shortly after Blake's death. The ministry counsels those with drug and alcohol problems.

Riley continued his abstinence, even when the depths of horrific depression tempted him. And he reasons, so can everyone else.

On another note, is there anyone who can explain how to copy and paste without having huge sections of blank space? I know some of the formatting will not copy over properly... but anytime I insert HTML code I have huge blank sections before what I insert.

It's funny. When Mike Williams was applying for reinstatement, OU fans were the most vocal in their opposition of it, and they argued the "precedent it would set". Different tune these days.

I've found HTML functionality varies from forum to forum. For example, I can't get HTML to work at all in the Recruiting Forum if I paste it directly there. However, if I move a thread into there from a forum where HTML works correctly, it's OK (until I edit it when it's in the Recruting Forum and then it gets all jacked up again). Also, some forums make you remove all extra spaces and paragraph breaks (carriage returnb/line feed, or CRLF) to avoid getting all that blank space. It's hit and miss unfortunately.

For example, this simple HTML table may or may not work here because I haven't removed the extra white spaces and CRLFs, and may have a ton of blank space above it:

<table border="1" bgcolor="d8d8d8">
<tr>
<td>Row 1, Column 1</td>
<td>Row 1, Column 2</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Row 2, Column 1</td>
<td>Row 2, Column 2</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Row 3, Column 1</td>
<td>Row 3, Column 2</td>
</tr>
</table>

Notice all the blank space above the table. Now I'll remove the extra stuff, and you'll see there's no extra space above the table:

<table border="1" bgcolor="d8d8d8"><tr><td>Row 1, Column 1</td><td>Row 1, Column 2</td></tr><tr><td>Row 2, Column 1</td><td>Row 2, Column 2</td></tr><tr><td>Row 3, Column 1</td><td>Row 3, Column 2</td></tr></table>

"doctorb"

I thought that a person in your position might be a little more understanding of a kid with an obvious addiction who at least has been pointed in the right direction.

I hope this kid gets it together. People just look at the "black and white" here don't realize that telling an alcoholic to "just quit drinking" is like someone else telling them to "just quit breathing."

I hear ya Milwood. I just think it's so cold to refer to a kid who went through a rehab program as a "drunk loser." Hopefully Riley's influence will get this kid straightened out. How anyone can project ill-will onto a young guy like this with addiction issues is beyond me.

Dvoracek didn't miss most of the 2004 season because of alcohol addiction/rehab. He missed most of the 2004 season because he was kicked off the team for a series of events that culminated in him putting his friend in the hospital. Did alcohol play a role in him committing those offenses? Probably. Was he kicked off the team for alcohol? No. He was kicked off the team for pounding people.

How is this any different than if Irizarry said he was addicted crack or porn and mugged that kid because of his addiction? Or if Winston Justice said he was addicted to viagra when he decided to wave a pellet gun at a person he mistook for his friend?

This guy has a string of cheap-shot assault charges and a sexual assault charge to top it off. While I hope he does get his life straight, this guy has been given more lives than a cat, and he is a loser until proven otherwise.

Here are 3 previous threads we've had on this guy:

1. When he got kicked off

2. When he was granted a medical redshirt for his problem

3. When he was reinstated on the team
