QB CJ Stroud (All B1G, 2022 B1G QB of the Year, All-American, NFL OROY, Houston Texans)

maybe he needs more than a week or two? Didn’t Day excuse away CJ missing time during camp as ‘regular’ rest for the QB’s? Sounds like he may have been dealing with this for awhile?
Exactly what I thought..he's not 100% and if he isn't then get him out of the game. No more "I don't have a choice" just sit CJ and play Kyle if he's not healthy.

I don’t know why but CJ doesn't feel right to me? Not sure what it is though. Obviously he's done well and I've never called for him to be benched (I'm still not saying that) but something just doesn't feel right.

To me it feels like 2004 when Zwick was in but we all knew Smith was the backup if that makes sense.

Either there’s a small injury and coach is being coy or CJ has been balling in camp, because a first time starter can use all the reps he can get.

Same thing I said above.

Yeah, regardless QB2 needs some real game experience.

The injury thing is odd to me. Wouldn't think of shoulder injuries as ones you can play through. Highly doubt it's going to get significantly better until the offseason and rest, so injured Stroud must be better than McCord in Day's eyes.

He also seems really confident in him as the starter. Last week it made sense as he made some of the best throws I've seen a Buckeye QB make. No idea if Day is doing the right thing by playing him while banged up, but he definitely doesn't want to pussyfoot around and have 2 guys with 3 games of experience each at the midseason mark.

This game is a good example of why that is. You need guys to see as many looks as possible so you can get it on film and adapt for future games. Tulsa's defense might not be elite, but it's probably confusing for a young QB.

Tulsa is exactly the kind of unit Buckeye fans hate to see, especially at that time of year. It will force the Scarlet and Gray out of its comfort zone (the zone run game) and make a young QB (whoever it might be) throw into a crowded secondary playing a variety of coverages.

Interested to see if there's another article this week discussing if this is why things flipped to a stagnant offense this week or not.

No matter what, Stroud has to figure out a way to be consistent and make more catchable throws. But that's the only thing that feels off. McCord will see time this week, so we'll see what he can do. He probably doesn't throw high, but people are fooling themselves if they think he'd just take over without his own issues. Backup QBs are always popular, but it turns into a shitshow real quick if they aren't the messiah.

We don't see the QBs in practice and possibly the backups are worse, but I'm convinced by LJB's analysis. Stroud held the team back this week. He is young and did appear to fold in the last minutes against Oregon. His performance in this game was sometimes painful to watch. He does indeed play like a player who thinks he might not see the field again if another QB gets a shot. If it's a shoulder problem, then hold him out for the next game and let your 2 and 3 get a bit of playing time. If for no other reason, you don't want an injury to take this guy out and start a QB with no playing experience against the much tougher competition ahead. As for what someone posted above, this also feels exactly the same as it did with Zwick. This team could lose badly a few times this year unless competent QB leadership and play begins quickly. The coaches have some very difficult days ahead.

One little thing that I noticed about Stroud....

With around 10 minutes left in the second quarter, Stroud went under center for a few plays, which is something that we haven't seen at Ohio State for at least a decade. And guess what? Stroud looked really good, completing consecutive passes of 13 yards to Garrett Wilson and 18 yards to JSN.

Believe it or not, some QBs actually like being under center for the simple reason that they don't have to worry about catching the shotgun snap, and because they don't have to take their eyes off the defense even for a split second while the football is traveling back from the center. So I thought to myself, maybe we've got this thing figured out....

But then in the 4th quarter, Stroud again went under center for one play and he missed his receiver badly. So, maybe not.

Having Akron next week... could provide options...
You could rest his shoulder, which obviously hurts, for almost 2 weeks
or
you use Akron as a practice game to work out some kinks

QB C.J. STROUD
  • "Definitely not 100 percent, but who is 100 percent at this time." Stroud says he was "healthy enough to play."

Just "healthy enough to play" doesn't necessarily cut it. I think Stroud's (sub par) performance against Tulsa proved that we need a 100% healthy Stroud going forward. If resting him against Akron will get him healthy, I think that they should rest him. Besides we need to see what QB2 will do in a real game.
