QB Troy Smith (2006 Heisman Trophy Winner)

I don't know if the San Francisco 49ers can run the table to snatch the NFC West crown, but the insertion of Troy Smith as the starting quarterback makes them the most dangerous team in the division.
While the thought of a 3-6 team emerging as a powerhouse is laughable on the surface, a close examination of the film reveals an offense capable of terrorizing opponents behind an old-school formula with Smith as a centerpiece.
...

Smith might not be the 49ers' long-term answer at quarterback, but his versatility has given the team a quick fix that has added an explosive element to their offense. With defenses now forced to deal with a balanced attack, the 49ers have a chance to live up to their lofty preseason expectations.

It is kind of hard for a Buckeye homer like myself to honestly assess Troy's play and in turn his potential as a legitimate starting quarterback in the NFL.

What do you think Troy needs to do to convince folks outside of the Buckeye circle that he is a legit NFL QB? Does he need to lead the 49ers to the playoffs? What kind of stats does he need to put up?

If he keeps winning and not turning the ball over, that'll be enough. If he keeps putting up the stats he's putting up, he'll get even more recognition.

December 5th. If he torches the defense, no one can argue.

Green Bay statistically has the best passing defense with 28 sacks and 14 interceptions.

Also 3rd in points allowed.

He torches them, everyone will know he's the real deal.

"It's a fine line, it really is," Singletary said. "I mean, when you look at him play, some of the things that he does, some of the decisions that he made, he's still a young guy. And I think that's our job, to keep him out of harm's way and to make sure that we protect him as much as we can."

....

Johnson has used the three-part drill with Smith in practice. The specifics are classified information, but it gives Smith choices of what to do with the ball when flushed out and mandates how to protect the ball no matter what.
Think of it as Johnson's way of controlling Smith's chaos when the pocket crumbles, the play falls apart, or both.

This Singeltary guy is a piece of work. I agree Troy has been lucky with regards to not turning the ball over. He's going to throw a pick eventually, he might even fumble eventually, but I don't see the reason for constraining Troy Smith at this point.

Troy Smith was never a big interception risk. Didn't he have 30TDs to 5INTs his senior year?
I'm not saying he doesn't or won't make mistakes, but he doesn't make them often. The minimal risk he does present is something you have to take along with the big clutch plays.

Let's not forget the "other option" in this case is Alex Smith: 46TDs, 52INTs in 50 career games.

Troy really pulled his OL's ass out of the fire, winning despite having multiple TDs called back last week. I've got to believe they'll clean things up this week (or Davis should have his hands taped into flippers).
