  • Are you for or against Red Light cameras?

Civil Libertarians are against them due to privacy concerns.

Others think they are a good idea because of jackasses who run red lights and cause accidents.

Personally, I'm posting this thread to post a link which shows the kind of idiocy that is driving around in Springtuckey these days...

its been in the columbus dispatch a lot lately. from a personal point of view id make a few comments: everyone knows where they are, mostly. it doesnt seem to effect the situation at many unmonitored intersections, in those intersections where their are cameras people slam on there breaks like crazy at any sign of yellow...

The evidence suggests they don't decrease accidents (increases in rear-ender offset decrease in right angle crashes). So, they're just a money maker for local govs. Just raise damned taxes.

    Safety Evaluation of Red-Light Cameras

I'd rather them make money by catching people doing things illegally than raise my taxes.

I'm for them. If someone is driving like a maniac and causing problems for other drives, I always yell at them and wish bad things upon them. A fine would do.

I never really see anyone doing anything in the middle of an intersection that would make a privacy invasion a legitimate complaint.

Did the "others" ever watch the video you posted? Apparently the camera(s) did not prevent a single one of these accidents.

Your evidence shows a waste of time and money.

I know the flash of the camera sometimes startles me, and I start to either jump on the brakes, or if I have my foot on the brake already, I start to gun the car. Either way, the flash almost caused an accident a couple of times. I imagine it has happened to others also.

    No, not those "others"

The red lights didn't prevent anything either, so we should scrap them too.

The point is that people will think twice about running a red light and hopefully not run it.

I sped a lot when I first got my license, until I got caught. Then I stopped. I think a similar thing is the goal here. If there's no immediate punishment, people will keep doing it. Getting hurt is punishment, but people think they're immune to accidents.

Stop running red lights and you don't have to worry about the flash. I've seen the flash once - when someone else was running a light.

people who can't pay attention to the pretty bright lights aren't going to pay attention to the tiny camera taking their picture either. this won't stop a single accident. whats next? putting cameras on stop signs to make sure we all come to complete stops? law enforcement isn't about revenue generation. city leaders need to figure that out at some point.

im all for putting cameras on streets if we're going after reckless drivers. but as others have noted, this is about money. enforce the laws that protect us, not just the ones you can write tickets for.

were red lights really intended to cut down on accidents? i always thought they were ment for more efficient movement of traffic.

They probably don't have that much of an impact on the dolts who fly through the intersection way after it turns red, but I think it has an impact on the gray area decisions. If you see the camera or already know it is there, you are less likely to buzz through when it turned yellow a second before the stop line.

    United States Constitution said:

To be clear, I think the cameras do provide evidence... but only people testify... as a consequence, unless someone can go through the "how do you know it was working" questions, and so on.. well.. then I find these cameras violative of the Constitution.

can't argue that, but i have a hard time believing the "gray area" decisions are the ones that cause accidents. if they are a safer approach might be to rethink the time delay from yellow to red on those lights and the red to green timer on the opposite side of the intersection rather than cameras. which of course leads me back to "why are we doing this"? is it really to make my commute safer or is the city looking to make a quick buck?

If it were a serious issue of grave public concern, then they should put a cop on the street corner to watch for violations of the traffic laws.

I disagree. I know for a fact that people have driven more carefully around intersections they know have cameras. I think it's kind of ridiculous to think it does absolutely nothing, other than make money for the city.

And I don't really have a problem with the city making money off people breaking laws.

I can spin this a different direction, too. People who can't pay attention to the speed limit signs are the same way. Should we just not monitor speeds because people are doing it whether it's being watched or not?

These things are laws. I have no problems with enforcing them more efficiently. Even if it prevents very few accidents, it still prevents them.
