Seahawks (ex-USC) Coach Pete Carroll (official thread)

I would be shocked if the NCAA ever actually used the Death Penalty again. It's taken SMU off the map for over 20 years, and I don't know that the NCAA thought that's what would result. The idea of killing USC football for 2 years seems "bad for business" The idea of killing it for 20 plus years seems even more so.

Now, that doesn't mean that if they're committing infractions they should slide. That's certainly not my opinion. I'm just saying I would seriously doubt a 100,000 pound shit hammer is about to drop, though I would think it's possible that Carroll's move to Seattle is indicative that there is more than just smoke....

That said, I also think it's entirely possible that Carroll wants to go to the NFL to show he can get it done there (redeem his performance in New England). I can't say I know what makes Carroll tick... and he's always seemed to me to be a pretty relaxed "go with the flow" sort of fella. But, you don't get to his position without drive and goals, so... I don't know.. I'm just saying he might just feel like proving himself at the next level is something he's "got" to do, despite being the king of LA, and could have little or nothing to do with the NCAA investigation.

Re: Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier could agree to interview, but he is unwilling to do so if Carroll has been promised full control of the Seahawks -- and multiple sources say he has.

Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke told Frazier that Carroll definitely does not have Seattle's job. Believing Leiweke, Frazier will interview for the Seahawks head coach job Saturday morning.

Sources: USC Trojans' Pete Carroll, Seattle Seahawks reach agreement on coaching contract - ESPN

That's this morning. If he wasn't flown out to Seattle last night, I wonder if it is a "phone interview".

I'm thinking these new owners in Seattle are about to get hit with a hefty fine for failing to seriously interview minority candidates. Seriously, how can you be successful enough to own a professional sports franchise and so botch your first move?

Let's face it, the only really good sources of accurate information are the UPS girls:

Without a question one of the top five dominant coaches of the decade, along with Tress, Brown, Meyer, and Stoops. Lots of implications for the Pac10 and recruiting in general.

This is the top tier with Carroll - gone and Meyer in flux. Next tier of schools might be something like Alabama, Michigan, Penn State, Florida State, Miami, LSU, Notre Dame. Michigan is in shambles, FSU and Notre Dame both just lost their coach. At this point in recruiting game this either has be be good for Saban, Stoops, Tressel and Brown or it is good for the small schools that some of these elite kids might never otherwise consider. You have to think this throws these classes up for grabs somewhat.

Must admit, this story brings a smile to my face. I think old Petey didn't want to see what the ncaa had in store for them. I think he had a few more "What's your deal?" kinda games, courtesy of his PAC10 brethren, in store as well. Yep, Petey got while the gettin was good.

I think ESPN's track record with this situations is pretty rough because they're so anxious and hard up to break the story that sometimes they'll leak something knowing it's not 100% true, to generate an even stronger rumor or influence, ride that wave, and then say later on..."hey we never said it to be 100% true". That's ESPN for ya.

As for PETEY, I hope he goes. I don't mind USC being a recruiting juggernaut, but I'm definitely tired of seeing his jolly mug plastered all over everything like he's the patron saint of being the recruit's bff.

Vitale just had some less than flattering remarks about this situation during the UCONN vs. GTown. In a nut shell, Carroll is taking the money and leaving town before the NCAA sanctions come down.

Might be the first time I've enjoyed something out of his mouth.
