New UCLA coach Steve Alford has an interesting buyout clause

Steve Alford has a $10.4 million buyout clause in his contract as the head coach of the UCLA Bruins men's basketball program, according to the LA Times.

Alford's contract isn't available to the public yet, but the LA Times picked up a copy and broke the news on his buyout clause. If Alford decides to leave his contract before April 30, 2016, he will owe UCLA $10.4 million. Likewise, if UCLA cans Alford before the same day, it will owe him the same amount.

The early buyout is more than half the total of what Alford's base salary would pay if he wasn't fired during the duration of the contract. Alford is set to make $2.6 million a year for seven years, a total of $18.2 million.

The buyout was apparently included, according to the report, to make sure Alford didn't do what he did to his previous employers at New Mexico.

Appreciate the newsy post, but this doesn't exactly qualify as an earth-shattering surprise.

Smug churchiness combined with mediocre performance doesn't play well in SoCal. Hiring Alford to begin with was a big head-scratcher.

Not sure where I indicated it was "an earth-shattering surprise" - just posted to the thread. It is the first time UCLA shitcanned their coach midseason, though.

The problem with that job is no one is ever going to replicate John Wooden's crazy string of titles yet he's the measuring stick (at least for older fans/alums).

Not sure where I said you did.

Now, let's quit the chest-out posturing and get to discussing who the heck the Bruins can sucker into the job this time. Howland and Alford clearly weren't up to fan expectations. Hope they stay the fuck away from Holtmann.
