Tajh Boyd (official thread)

Yeah, he's a sophomore this year and will be a junior next. Kelley absolutely raves about him and it sounds like he could be a future NFLer.

Masoli is only 5-11. If he's going to be a future NFLer, I'd be willing to bet it won't be at QB.

Also, per the earlier list, one of Oregon's freshmen quarterbacks (Derron Thomas, I believe) was moved to wide receiver. Still, the depth chart at Oregon is deeper than at either OSU or PSU.

Hi guys... I am an Oregon fan, but FWIW, thought I would add a little insight from this end.

Soph. QB Masoli was a full qualifier out of HS. He was one of those talented kids that drops through the recruiting cracks when they transfer to a new school between the junior and senior year of HS. Talented, but definitely overlooked.

RS Soph. Nate Costa was the projected starter before the start of the regular season, yet tore his ACL for the 3rd time (right knee), plus his mcl, less than 2 weeks before the opening kickoff of the '08 season. He had already missed the end of last season due to a severe ACL tear, also suffered in practice, the week before Dennis Dixon went down. (Oregon is awaiting completion of rehab on the latest surgery to determine his future status.)

True frosh Chris Harper, out of Wichita, Kansas, was the (fr) QB who converted to a WR. (This is not necessarily a permanent move... Time, and the developement of his throwing mechanics will tell.)

True frosh Darron Thomas, who threw a 35 yard pass in last week's Civil War game with Oregon State, will most likely RS next season, if he doesn't win the starting position.

RS soph Justin Roper was the 2nd string QB before getting the nod when Costa went down. Moreo of a pocket passer than the rest of the rotation. Probably 2nd or 3rd string next season.

For all intents and purposes, unless things change Oregon has essentially 3 QBs in their current rotation that can be figured to definitely be in contention next season. The jury is still out on Harper and Costa.

Thanks for the insight into the Oregon situation...nice to have both Oregon and PSU fans here to help clarify their QB situations as it pertains to Boyd.

This is a prime example of how crazy the recruiting process can be. I didn't even think this kid had tOSU in his plans when he was first looking at schools, now we're in his top 3! WOW

Click HERE for a video of Boyd being interviewed at the EAS Elite 11 camp. When asked,"Do you have a role model in life?" he replies "As far as football goes, Troy Smith." He also mentioned that the school he picks will depend on how much he and his mom like the coach.

Q: "What's the #1 reason you chose [West Virginia]?"

A: "Mom liked the coaches, I like the coaches."

I have known Tajh for a while, and let me tell you he is a great kid. His role model has been Troy Smith for awhile, and he even wears the number 10 because of him. TOSU is getting in the game kind of late for him, and I know he has liked BC for awhile. There also are some reservations about TP, and when he would be able to play. The kid throws the prettiest ball I have ever seen, and has a lighting quick release. He has mobilty, but really wants to be considered a pocket passer. I really hope we can get this kid, I have been working him over for years...LOL

Thanks for sharing, Jax. It would be interesting to see how they'd use Boyd in 2009, since 2010 will likely be a NC run. While they might normally redshirt Tajh to get separation, they may want him battle tested for '10.

I think Tajh would be an ideal TOSU QB. He can move, and can REALLY throw the ball. I know he goes to school in Hampton, but Tajh is really from Virginia Beach. He moved up to Hampton after his freshman year. As a freshman he went to Landstown (same school as Percy Harvin) which was why/how he had to connection to Coach Beatty at West Virginia (Beatty used to be the Landstown head coach).

I am trying to sell him that he could come in and redshirt a year, back up TP his second year, and would be a great replacement for TP whenever he leaves.

Maybe you should mention that he could be the backup NEXT year and not redshirt, if he's concerned about when he'll be able to play. With all the rumors about Bauserman flying (not that I believe any of them anyway), this may be closer to the truth anyway.

All this while it was looking like tOSU v Oregon....didn't know BC was a player in this.

BC was the first school to really give him a look and offer him. Even when he first picked West Virginia BC was right there on his list.

WVU did not drop him, he dropped them. There were a couple of personal things that happened with him and the school, and he really did not feel like the offense fit his style. Remember he wants to come in and prove that he is a great passer more than a QB who can run.

I truly believe wherever he ends up his passing skills will shine through. He does have mobility, which is an added plus, but like I said Tajh can really throw the ball!

Let me also say that his parents are going to play a major role in his decision. His dad handles a lot of his recruitment, and will probably visit this board if he hasn't already. I think the school that can win over his parents will have the inside shot at getting Tajh to sign. Good thing Coach Tressel seems to be really good at that.
