To boo or not to boo - when does it go too far?

bukIpower said:
you think I'm guilty?! haha for WHAT? come on guys stop pinning me as a person who is just wanting to boo zwick...I NEVER SAID I DID!!!!!!!!!!!

you guys are sad.
No, I don't think anyone thinks you want to boo Zwick. These seem to be the issues:

1 - The idea that we shouldn't be upset about people booing because we sometimes bash players. As 21 pointed out, people who bash players don't last long around here... and the rest of us can be plenty upset with the people who disrespect our players without showing an ounce of hypocrisy for it.

2 - The idea that somehow players should expect to be booed if they aren't measuring up to expectations. Yes, it will happen, and yes, these guys need learn how to let it roll off their backs - and I think they do. That has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that jerks who show our players such disrespect are despicable.

You see, it isn't that anyone thinks you are personally sitting there yelling insults at our guys... but saying we shouldn't mind when others do is what's getting you red chicklets. Frankly, I'm not wild about being called a hypocrite, either.

I think things spun way out of control here... probably best to just cut losses here and move on...

And now I just saw HundredLanes' post and I have an ice cream headache... sigh...

This is a great opportunity for any poster to get mad props for their posts for their supposive 'sticking up for a player'. lol
Just to clarify, I didn't say what I said to get props; I have no need for that. I said it to describe how much the booing really ticked me off. I'm not the type to yell something like that in front of 20,000 people. I didn't yell it for the people across the stadium to hear, and it was a knee-jerk reaction. You won't hear it on the Channel 10 broadcast. But people around me heard, and some agreed.

The argument that booing him on the field is no different than bashing him on a message board is totally true. Booing him on the field, however, is a spur-of-the-moment thing that can not be retracted; you can always delete a statement you made about a player online before damage can be done, but you can not recall the voices of a group of people. So, being booed like that is more damaging, IMHO.

OK I Just got home from Columbus and what a day it was. The game was awesome, it was wet but who cares I got to see those scarlet and gray uni's out on that field for the first time since I was watching them beat the shit out of scum. It could of -35 degrees and I still would of been there. I love the bucks just as much as everyone of us on here does. Not a single one of us have a right to boo these kids. I only feel bad for Justin. If you guys turn back to when he was being recruited he was a fuckin' hero. The people at the game today that were booing would probably waited in line at his high school to get his autograph. Some kids go through tough times they stuggle, but us as fans and supporters are here to bring him back up. He played his guts out for us and his university in the Alamo Bowl.

The Main thing is that Justin Zwick is a BUCKEYE!

As for BukI the thing you say about criticizing him and booing as being the same. Well they are different. If I say he throws off his back foot that is not putting the kid down. That is something that the coaches are probably telling him too. The coaches don't boo him when he makes a bad pass. I don't care if booing goes on everywhere you as a buckeye fan should not even think about saying anyone has a right too. You should of wanted to yell at them people and stop them. Mad props to LRA for yelling at some people as I turned to the people in my section and told them I couldnt believe it.

How about looking things over before you post them, huhhh? And that is what tOSU fans have come to expect over the years...perfection. If you say you were happy with Zwick's preformance, you are lying.
I got a couple of things for your piss poor attempt at a thing you call a fuckin' post.

Yeah his balls don't look like Joe Montana but neither do Smith's. A football is not easy to throw in wet conditions as most people know. Add a soakin' wet jersey compounded with cold when you are not use to it as it has been 70 degrees out and you get bad balls.

If you are looking for perfection on a football field you will be looking for a long time. It just doesnt happen. I am pretty sure we didnt play a perfect game in the 02 championship year and we won a championship. I bet you werent bitchin' about Krenzel's performance then.

What would you have done if you pulled you broke a nail while playing with your barbies. I am sure you would of went cryin' to your mommy.

The last thing I have for you is grow up a little bit and come back when you hit puberity and if you are a grown man well then you are just pathetic.

Now I am done. Back to regular sceduled programming.

Point that is not being addressed b bukIpower is that it existing doesn't somehow make it right. There's a reason you don't boo the player, and the fact that the few tools out there ignored it doesn't make it any less wrong. I'd like to see those fans start booing Zwick with Rehring, Simon Fraser, AJ Hawk and others sitting around him. He'd never dream of doing that b/c he knows they'd beat him up for being a cancerous traitor posing as a fan.

I realize you have these inhibitions about it or something, but how does that not translate over?

I believe that slavery is wrong. If I lived 200 years ago and it was prevalent and everyone used slaves, it would change my methods and frequency of confrontation with those who condone it, but it wouldn't change whether or not it's wrong.

Buying a ticket does not give you the right to single out and mock a kid who has never done anything wrong other than not living up to everyone's unfair expectations. I suppose if I buy stock in a company then I have the right to call up and voice my protests in a mocking tone regularly?

The point is that there is something called loyalty, decency, and loving your fellow buckeye. I didn't like Lydell Ross at all last year, but for the most part I think I still loved the guy as a buckeye. And the times I went overboard, while understandable due to his performance were not excusable.

haha boys I don't boo, and I don't think we should boo our players. However, they do and its their right to do so... bad taste or not its their right.

Don't even compare booing with freedom of speech...even the freedom of speech is not absolute (you can't yell "Fire!" in a crowded theater if there is not fire, you can't use racial slurs without fear of reprisal, etc.). Assholes who boo kids in a scrimmage are just that...assholes.

I like this forum so i decided to post for the first time, interesting topic.

my question is were u guys this upset when Lydell Ross was getting booed non stop through out last year and even the year before? did you guys have 5 pages saying how bad the fans are treating Lydell?? and that is not good to boo college athletes??? hell no yo along with everybody alse were saying how much he sucks. but i guess when the typical golden boy aka the American dream gets booed everybody wets their panties and gets upset.

The bottom line is years ago Swick was considered our Joe Montana before he stepped foot into campus, he was gonna be the savior that was gonna take the buckeyes to national glory, but things ain't always perfect and Swick never delivered, and he was a big reason why we lost 3 straight big ten games in a row, when was the last time that happened? whats more frustrating is that he has been here 4 years given every opportunity in the world to succeed and be a quality QB but he chokes gets nervous and gets worse and worse every game he plays. now is that a good reason to boo an individual? i don't know i don't care this is a man sport you perform they will chant your name nuuuuuuuuuugggggggggggeeeeeeeeeee, you suck and choke they will boooooooooooooooooooo its the nature of the beast stop crying and deal with it. Swick is a man and he should suck it up and continue to work hard because im sure when he throws a touchdown pass agaisnt maimi of ohio fans will cheer him on.

First of all, yes indeed there were posts on this board, some of them pretty vehement, against "fans" who were booing players. Now, this board is not quite two years old, so maybe you are using Bustnuts as your point of remembrance, but this board did indeed have quite a few posts slamming "boo birds". Also, keep in mind that this was a frickin' scrimmage game, and not some key Big Ten matchup.

By the way, it's "Zwick" with a "Z", and not "Swick". :roll1:

All I can say is, unbelievable, when I heard our fans booing Zwick, I wanted to get up and kick each and everyone of them in the head. Could the people who were booing him understand football any less? Why didn't they boo Troy when he threw one of the worst interceptions a QB can throw? Why didn't they boo Nicol when he dropped 2 or 3 Zwick passes that were right on the money? Why didn't they boo the weather?

I boo the "boo-birds" mothers who decided to keep them instead of having them ripped out of their wombs.

The reason Zwick gets booed is because he had so much on his plate when he got here. Now I never put the stock in him that everyone else did, but I thought he'd be a good QB and who knows maybe he might? However for us fas to come on here and bash fans for their actions yesterday is wrong. Because like posted before I don't see any difference in what Zwick got yesterday to what Ross got all year last year. INCLUDING ME, I was one of the people who was on this board saying he sucked and he blew over when the wind hit him. My over all point was this "don't call people out when everyone is just as guilty". What I said that pissed everyone off is the hypocrit statement, and also that the fans were not out of line because Zwick is an older player also he's been the one who's been claimed our savior.

What I realize is that maybe I shouldn't of even said it was out of line because most of you obviously think I was saying it was RIGHT. Theirs a big difference from 'not beeing out of line' to being "right". Being out of line is its ot really exceptable by most but it he behavior happens everywhere

Mili- Booing is a freedom of speech. If it wasn't I don't know if we'd have sports. I also agree that this got way out of control

I've asked a few of you to let this thread die or at least leave out the personal shots...

Thus far, nobody has listened.

You guys are running in circles here. Everyone has had their say and this thread is now starting to take that turn into the usual veiled assertions that infest every thread concerning Justin Zwick.

I'm asking everyone to use common sense, show some class, and remember we are all on the same team.

Now here is my final reminder for everyone...from the warning system:

Bashing You personally attacked a player, coach, recruit, or person of interest to the program or community. In order to receive this warning, it had to have gone above and beyond constructive criticism. Understand that players, recruits and their families read their threads on this site, and consider them when posting.
This warning is worth 50 pts...two of them gets you a one week vacation.

Please use your brain and leave the kids alone. There is no such thing as freedom of speech on a privately owned forum...We have very few rules on BP, but bashing players and coaches in a definite no-no.

Thanks in advance.

Something else you may want to remember is that he still has had only a half dozen starts in a Buckeye uni. No one has seen Justin at his best, wearing the Scarlet and Gray and no one has seen Justin perform when the Buckeye O-Line is firing on all cylinders. He also did not have Ginn being used in the game plan as much while he played. This kid can be lights out and I think we will see that in the Miami game.

my only question to those that were booing, is why only Zwick?? i can count numerous players that failed to live up their expectations. i went to the spring game just to see the bucks play and to get my college football fix. some things were great and some were bad. my point is that why were people taking this game so seriously that they booed?? and why was it only one player?? Smith had bad plays and everyone kept their mouths shut. receivers dropped balls and fumbled and fans kept their mouths shut. we have a great team and a wonderful shot at a title next season so can't we all agree that this was a scrimmage and that the coaching staff is going to do their best to get this team prepared so that we can all cheer come september?? ok i think im done.

It is evident from the Northwestern and Wisconsin games from last year and the Spring Game yesterday that Ohio State's fans leave something to be desired. I think Nebraska's program in the 90s was built on steroid-laden monsters, but their fans are definitely something to be proud of.
