Game Thread tOSU at Cal Bears, Sep 14, 7 ET, Fox

If the CB's play 'soft' then tOSU is in for a long day. Methinks that the CB's will play tight (Roby especially), and I see more than the 2+ picks that are projected. 2 step drops are hard to sack, but Bosa at 6'5" and Adolphus (if he plays) should get some passes batted down. Just hope that that kid that got 180+ yards on the D (in what, 3 carries?) has Shazier following him around all day. tOSU 52 - Cal 10.

:banger: Go Bucks

I really like some form of the dime against Cal. I hope to see more dime than nickel formations on defense. Dime makes the most sense to me for 2 reasons: Our weakest unit on D is in the middle and they throw a TON. I'd like to see 4 down lineman most of the game with Shazier by himself covering most of the true middle/center. That gives you 6 guys in the secondary to rotate around as needed. I just dont see the need for Perry or Grant much in this game.

I'll put it this way - I see Powell, Pitt Brown, and/or Bell getting more playing time than Perry or Grant. I don't see the point in 3 down lineman very often either. Bring one of the safeties or star guys up to help out Shazier when we expect the run. Dare them to keep throwing it while the big uglies in the trench create pressure and when we go to nickel I'd like to see us use Shazier and/or Roby to blitz. That's my armchair plan anyway, LOL. I am just very confident in our personel being able to handle this offense.

I would rather see Fick go conservative by giving up a little ground to potential running plays that by going soft in coverage. Put 6 DB's in there and play tighter coverage.

Shazier would be pretty filthy in a Dime, IMO.

With most of their starting line out, I have a feeling Hall and Smith are going to have field days on the ground.
tOSU is only 27th in rushing this year so far, and this needs to be fixed.

There was a lot of talk about everyone being back so the running game would be unstoppable.

Maybe we just need Hyde and Hall in at the same time ... running back and H back.

I consider that pretty damn good when considering Braxton only has 82yards and our top RB hasn't played yet. We're getting production on the ground elsewhere, which will only increase once Carlos comes back. What were you expecting?

Ohio State is 15th in YPC, and that after having run on every first down in the Buffalo game after the first quarter... and without Corey Linsley at center for all that time.

The running game will be more than fine.

We could stop passing so much which is what caused our total rushing yards to go up in previous seasons. YPC is what truly is the better measure and as DBB said, we're 15th which is pretty good.

I was expecting 100 ppg, first in running, first in passing. Ticket prices are high, and there are lots of ads on TV.

My point is that there are real marquee games that can be played and still fit the recruiting purpose. This was supposed to have been a "marquee" series.

If you step back and look at the "marquee" series from 2005 to 2023; one of those things is not like the others, and it wasn't that hard to see it would turn out that way
Yeah, then we can schedule Georgia now and they can suck in 10-12 years once we get around to actually playing them. Duh U was at the pinnacle of college football when we schedule them and they were mediocre once we actually played them. Cal was a solid team when we scheduled them and they're so-so at best right now. Va Tech was a top-notch team when we scheduled them, and they're not much right now. Scheduling UGA or GT woud be just a much hit-or-miss...

The only way Cal can keep it close is if we keep it close for them. If the offense can play a fairly clean game, I don't see Cal's defense stopping us much. Could be a very slow day for our Aussie punter. Which would be a good thing.
