Game Thread tOSU at Penn State - Oct 27th, 5:30 ET, ESPN

Story in SI: Article
Ohio State Buckeyes (8-0)
The Buckeyes slapped together a win with coat hangers and duct tape Saturday. If the program rises as the programs have at Urban Meyer's other stops, the Purdue victory will be considered a cornerstone. Pretty much everything went wrong, and the Buckeyes found a way to win. Now they have to go to State College for the Ineligibowl, or, depending how things go the rest the season, the unofficial Big Ten championship game. Under first-year coach Bill O'Brien, Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin has made a tremendous leap. He might be the best passer the Buckeyes face all season. In three Big Ten games, the Nittany Lions have averaged 90.3 plays a game. (Chip Kelly tips his visor.) Ohio State's thin defense will have trouble with this kind of volume, so the Buckeyes need to bleed the clock when they have the ball.

Last game: Beat Purdue, 29-22 (OT)
Next game: Saturday at Penn State
Is that number correct? If it is, WOW!

They don't really have a run game and they don't have really anyone who can kill us deep. They love the flats with the RB's and the TE's and the short hitch/slant routes. If we play them tight and limit big plays I think the defense is set up pretty well to have a pretty good game.

On offense just don't turn the ball over and we should be able to do enough to win the game from there. If we just stay out of our own way on special teams as well I think we could win this one with comfort 10+ points.

I'm looking at this thread and wondering why some seem to think the Bucks should cruise to a double digit victory? PoSU has won 5 in a row, they're at home, and the Buckeyes won their last 2 games in OT and by 3 points versus juggernauts Purdue and Indiana.

I hope the Bucks win. By no means do I expect it to be easy, but I'm more than willing to be proven wrong. I just don't see any logical reason to expect a romp, nor would I be shocked if PoSU pulls out a win.

Toss up game, all things considered, IMO. Definitely need a more efficient performance than the last two weeks.

Penn State also hasn't faced an offense with this much firepower. Yeah, I know we have our moments of ineptitude, but if they can get clicking early on, Penn State won't be able to stop them. The X-factor in this whole situation is the Buckeyes ability to stop Penn State's offense. If the defense can get in McMoxie's face, and rattle his cage, they lose big. Plain and simple.

Will this happen? God let's hope so.

PSU has not allowed an offensive score in the first quarter all year. OSU's O struggles in the first quarter. So naturally we should score 3 TD's in the first quarter and hold on to win late.

Magic number for Penn State: 0. Points allowed by the Nittany Lions in the first quarter this season. Penn State has outscored opponents 66-0 in the first quarter and 100-23 in the first half.

We scored on our first drive of the game against UCF, MSU, and Indiana. We also scored on offense in the first quarter of every game except Miami, UAB, and Nebraska. In the two night games we've played, we've scored 56 and 45 points on offense. I'd like to think we have a good chance of ending PedState first-quarter scoreless streak...

Especially if the offensive playcalling takes into account, they're (PSU defense) going to be pumped up and aggressively going after Braxton Miller. If Corey Brown gets the ball behind the line of scrimmage (screen pass or something like that) on OSU's very first offensive play, I bet that makes for a huge gain.

The key to a Buckeye victory on Saturday is to score more points than PSU.

:p

(We haven't had this type of in depth analysis since a certain poster was perma-banned)
And let me emphasize that what matters is the number of points scored during the entire game. :p

PSU is playing very well as a team right now. They've completely bought into O'Brien's schemes and techniques and that's the only reason they're 5-2 and not 2-5. They are a group of mediocre players (for the most part) with little depth, and they're covering up for their inadequacies by playing well as a team. That's great, and a testament to O'Baggins, but it's also something that can, and hopefully will, be exploited. One-on-one matchups will go in OSU's favor, and hopefully Miller has his long ball back on target (and the WRs catch the ball), because Smith and the TEs could have a big day catching seam routes against a depleted secondary.

It will be a tough game Saturday, they run an offense that will trouble OSU. Their defense isn't anything special, but OSU will have it's usual inconsistencies on offense, even though I think that when Miller and co. eventually hit their stride they should be able to roll up 35-45 points. If the DL can do their part and get pressure, OSU should be able to disrupt McMoxie enough to get a few turnovers and take advantage on offense.

I say OSU has a big 3rd Q, pulls ahead by a few TDs and then holds onto the lead and wins 38 - 24 :oh:
