SKULL SESSION: RECRUITING THROUGH THE STORM, MARSHON LATTIMORE'S UPCOMING GAUNTLET AND JIM HARBAUGH'S VOTE OF CONFIDENCE

'CROOTIN THROUGH THE STORM.
We all waited tirelessly for over two weeks to find out Urban Meyer's fate, but the coaching staff didn't really have that luxury. They still had a job to do, and part of that job was recruiting through the uncertainty.

Incredibly, not one player reopened his recruitment in the midst of the investigation and only one, linebacker Kane Patterson, has since decommitted. The key to it all was open communication, constant contact and, well, the prospects themselves.

From Bill Landis of Cleveland.com:

"For me, and I think this goes with most people in the class, when you commit to Ohio State, you commit to more than just one person," said Wilson, a five-star 2019 receiver from Austin, Texas. "This is a program that whoever has been at the helm, they've had success and put players in the league. You gotta get an education, and they set you up for stuff after football. This is bigger than just one person at Ohio State. Coach Meyer has a huge impact of course, but it's more than just one person."

...

"The communication has been, 'Hey, listen, you can ask questions, we may not have he the answers to them, but ask the hard questions,'" Day said last week. "So there's been open communication with all of them. They have all stuck together and I know that they all communicate with each other. So that's been a positive."

That last part is key.

It worked out well that Day recruited the top two players in the 2019 class -- Wilson and five-star center Harry Miller -- and quarterback Dwan Mathis. That class as a whole is a bit quiet, especially compared to the 2020 group, but that Day has strong bonds with players who can be labeled leaders in that class matters.

It's crazy how recruiting has evolved to the point that the recruits do a lot of the heavy lifting themselves. Do you think Woody Hayes ever kept a commitment from a five-star lineman in Georgia because he's close with a committed five-star wide receiver from Texas?

Update on Ohio State WR recruiting

The wide receiver position is one of great importance in Ohio State’s 2019 recruiting class and the future looks bright.

Urban Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff have known for a while that they would need to focus on the wide-receiver position in the 2019 recruiting class. With the possibility of the Buckeyes losing the majority of their current WR corp following the season, Meyer and the Buckeyes will need to restock the cupboard.

Fortunately, this past weekend the program earned its second commitment at the position in Jameson Williams. Rated as the No. 24 WR prospect in the country, Williams will make for an excellent addition along five-star WR commit Garrett Wilson, the nation’s No. 2 WR.

However, interim-WR coach Brian Hartline cannot breathe a sigh of relief just yet, as Ohio State is looking to add at least one more WR in this year’s class. The Buckeyes have been heavily targeting multiple prospects at the position but it appears they are now able to cross two of those names off of their list.

Four-star WR Trey Knox (Murfreesboro, TN / Blackman) was considered an Ohio State lean just earlier this year, however in the world of college football recruiting, things change quickly, and on Monday, Knox announced his decision to commit to Arkansas.

While we mentioned that Ohio State was the favorite to land Knox just months ago, the decision Monday came as no surprise. It appeared as though the Buckeyes lost interest in Knox in the last few months, which led to his commitment to the Razorbacks.

The Buckeyes also seem to be jumping out of the race for four-star WR prospect Marcus Washinton (Saint Louis, MO / Trinity Catholic) as Texas gained momentum in the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions, Monday. The switch follows an official visit with the Longhorns two weeks prior.

Like Knox, Washington was also viewed as an Ohio State lean this summer, even going as far to mention that the Buckeyes were his top school at the time. However, in the following months, the spark between the two has appeared to dim.

Washington is expected to announce his decision in the coming weeks and while Ohio State isn’t out of it completely, it appears as if a one time Missouri-Ohio State race is now down to Missouri and Texas, with the Longhorns being the heavy favorite.

So where does this leave Ohio State?

The Buckeyes still have plenty of targets as the position who they appear to be more interest in, including four-star prospects David Bell, Elijah Higgins and Kyle Ford. While Ford is the higher-touted of the group, he also appears as the least likely of the group to land in Columbus, with Bell being the most likely.

4-star running back Sampson James flips from Ohio State to Indiana

This decommitment likely means that Ohio State is back on the market for a second back to pair with Steele Chambers. Unfortunately, it’s not a great year to be in need of a running back, and there’s really only two options that make much sense for Ohio State. Firstly, they could try to get back in on IMG star Noah Cain, who was a big target of the Buckeyes last year before falling off a bit this year. He seems either LSU or Texas-bound right now, but I do think Ohio State could get back in on him if they want to.

The other option, and probably the more likely one, is that Ohio State looks towards Dayton back John Bivens. Bivens is the 20th ranked running back, and 395th best player, according to 247Sports. Right now, he’s favoring Cincinnati, Kentucky, Louisville and Nebraska, and while Ohio State hasn’t really considered him a take to this point, I think they could absolutely land him if they were to extend an offer.

Just sayin": I like to see Ohio State recruit a running back in the Carlos Hyde mold (i.e. 230+ pounds) that could "power" through the line on 3rd or 4th and 1; and pick up the first down.

I could see Weber, Snead and Teague all moving the chains on 3rd and 4th and 1 and none are 230+. I’d like to see the staff kick the tires on Cain and Glass again, an turn up the heat on Sanders and McIntosh. Besides those 3 I’m sure there are other talented RBs as options still available.
Or I wonder if the next option is to try Chambers at RB and keep him as the only commit and take 2 RBs in 2020
