2020 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

There are always examples of 3 stars becoming studs but we've seen the data many many times. Stars do matter overall.

Tanner has a legit point imo. It's something worth noting just like all the swings and misses at RB this year.

Hopefully it's nothing but when you are trying to stay at the highest levels of performance, small things can make an impact.
True, but 60% of our 2020 class is either 4* or 5*, and one of our 3* commits is the #2 kicker. Conversely, TFUN's class is comprised of exactly half of 3* players and not a single 5*. Of their 24 commits TFUN has exactly two players who are in the top 10 at their position (#3 SDE and #8 OC), while we have the #1 OC, #1 OT, #1 WR, #2 K, #3 S, #5 CB, #7 WR, and #9 OLB...four times as many players who are in the top 10 nationally at their position.

To be clear, I am saying that there needs to be a good mix of top 100 types and 3 stars where you rely on the coaches evaluation and player development.

As with most things, the trick is finding the right balance.

What I took @Tanner point to be was a raised eyebrow over the % of 3 stars in a particular class and therefore a question, more than a concern, about the balance.

I think we have that, along with the fact that not only having 4* and 5* players but many of those who are 4* are among the very best (near 5*).

I hope all of the TTUN recruits got to enjoy the "Beatdown in the Big House" while serenaded by the "O-H-I-O" chant today.

I was just thinking about this after reading go blow last week. Sounded like they had a big group in town. Not a surprise as it’s The Game and all. That said, with the kind of beat down they witnessed, unless a kid has no other option or is a tsun legacy, you’ve got to ask why a kid would consider going into that program.

To be clear, this isn’t about losing in The Game. They’ve done that plenty over the last 20 years. It’s more, however, how they have been losing the last few. They have good athletes there. I know we rag on them, that’s our job... but these kids are D1 athletes in a P5 program with unreal resources at their disposal.

What I’m asking myself if I’m one of those kids at that visitation is what in the absolute *** is the coaching staff not doing. Are they too stupid to put together a decent wholistic game plan? Are they incompetent in terms of player development? Do they not care enough to prepare adequately for the rivalry game? Are they satisfied with their performance in other games that this doesn’t matter? And what kind of discipline are they coaching up... one that after a tackle they untie opponent’s shoes?

And if that’s what it takes, the untying of the opponent’s shoes, to win a game? What in the absolute ****ing kind of circus is being run by the head clown? Resorting to sophomoric things like untying the shoes of a player who is gashing you on the field to gain an advantage doesn’t speak well for the team, the coaches and frankly the confidence the players have in the team or the coaches.

While we suffer from an embarrassment of riches in so many ways, that school up north is nothing more than an embarrassment of themselves and of their entire culture.

Edits for recruiting forum. My bad.

And another 3* is Cameron freaking Martinez!

Another issue with the high number of 3 stars is that Day had to address OL depth due to misses in the Urban era. The player rankings are biased toward skill players and those positions that value players with high athleticism. Last year there were 60 OL of the 385 4 stars in the 247 composite rankings.

They took 2 Ohio kids that would never sniff 4 star status early in the cycle to address the depth issue. This was offset by having 2 highly ranked OL already committed. They added 2 more 3 stars to round the OL class.

One intrepid contributor to BP noted that the highest Xichigan recruit was a WR...and tOSU had three WRs ranked higher than that one. Not entirely true, as tOSU has FOUR WRs ranked higher than said Wolverweenie WR. Maybe that is the root cause for Hairball refusing to respond to the question (he called it an insult - I call it the truth), of "what are you going to do about the disparity between skillsets of the two teams" or somesuch. Dunno, maybe these recruits can read the papers and social media and figure that that school up north (caps deliberately omitted) is headed on a downward spiral? Anyway, Xichigan can still recruit the best shoelace untiers on the planet. Go Bucks!

What is their deal with untied shoe laces? Must be in the water up there.
