2024 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Has there been a recruiting shift that I've missed? (Probably!). Have always thought that only commitable offers went out to Ohio kids.....because they were wanting to jump on that offer. Now, it seems like staff is offering offers, of the non-commitable variety as well? Can visualize the offer, as "this is an offer subject to your performance at an tOSU camp this summer" or somesuch. Certainly would avoid recruit being butt-hurt because "tOSU hasn't paid me any attention". This way they'd get their attention AND an 'offer'. A small nuance, but maybe needed? Also wondering (too much idle time), can a recruit take an official (counting against allowed total), if they have a non-commitable offer? Anyone help me clear away the fog?
Just to add on to @RB07OSU and @Bestbuck36 , OSU really dropped the ball with regards to NIL and that led to losing a number of battles that they stayed in for too long, IMO. OSU couldve landed several more in state top targets if they actually went as hard at them earlier. A kid like Brenan Vernon could’ve been a Buckeye(I know many thought of him as stiff, and unathletic, but he could’ve been a solid backup to losing out on an inside/outside DL like Keeley). Jackson McGohan would’ve been a very solid pickup after losing Lockwood. Losing Dijon Johnson, but OSU could’ve gotten the Calhoun kid who played with Jermaine Matthews at Winston Woods. That’s 3 players in OH that OSU chose not to pursue because they felt confident in other higher rated OOS recruits who they couldn’t keep up in the NIL game. And Nigel Glover and Trevor Carter we’re solid LBs who could’ve made up for Bowles or Curtiss
And we all know about missing on any RB in the ‘23 class since they took far too long pursuing Cornist or Sperling

Here is my annual wayyyyyy too early projection of the '24 class, as I am sure everyone has been on the edge of their seats for:

QB: Jadyn Davis (we're trailing here currently but it could be a good fit and we have a chance to get back in the mix...with Raiola out I think we are probably ending up with someone else, but need a placeholder for now...Kienholz in '23 is a straight up stud though, so while I would like a top QB in this class it is not a necessity)
RB: James Peoples (by far my favorite RB in this class we have a shot at and we are sitting pretty)
RB: Samuel Dixon (I'm not sure that this is an "OFFER", but we need 2 RBs in this class and he seems the most likely. I really wanted to put Marshall on this list but I have us trailing currently...not hearing warm and fuzzy vibes from my Cincy contact on Marshall, but we do still have a shot and just need to roll out the red carpet to get him here.
WR: Jeremiah Smith (already in like Flynn, top WR in the nation and rightfully so)
WR: Josiah Trader (assuming Smith will have some pull and aside from that angle, the interest is very real...could see him and Hudson battling for one of what I see as three total spots at WR for '24, I just think we are in better shape on Trader)
WR: Myles Graham (kid's film is unreal and if he was not in Indiana, I think he could be ranked the top WR in the nation...he is highly ranked at that, but I think he is going to be big time at the next level...sitting in the lead comfortably right now imo)
TE: Damarion Witten (great athlete and given the recent TE classes, I think we can bring him on and call it good at TE)
OL: Ian Moore (a huge foundational piece of this OL class, I think he could excel at RT or LT, or kick down to the interior based on whatever we need...likely candidate for "Surest Thing" in my BRPT class review assuming he puts pen to paper)
OL: Armstrong Twins (lumping them together for the purpose of this post, I think they both land here and have a crazy amount of upside...once they get into our S&C, they are going to be terrors on the OL...I see Deontae at OT and Devontae on the interior currently, that gives us at least two OT prospects with Moore)
OL: Marc Nave (I would put Nave in the highly likely category if he has an "OFFER"...haven't watched film though, so I can't speak to that yet)
OL: Guerdy Lamber (placeholder because I have him to ND right now...but the number is 5 for OL this year, maybe 6, and another OT prospect is what we probably want here)
DE: Elias Rudolph (really like this kid and think he finds his way back up to Ohio...DE is a pretty big need with JT and Sawyer potentially gone after this year)
DE: Elijah Rushing (longshot pick but we have a TON of offers out at DE and it is too early to tell where we have a legit shot...we need to knock DE out of the park in the '24 class though after the misses in '23...I am only putting 2 DE's down, but we are probably looking for 3)
DT: Jayden Jackson (originally from the midwest, strong LJ Sr ties, makes sense at this point)
DT: David Stone (wishful thinking combined with no other guesses other than Justin Scott, who I see as a longshot currently...hoping the DT recruiting for this class comes into focus because right now it doesn't really look likely for anyone we have offered yet...obviously it is early though, so plenty of time to go)
LB: Sammy Brown (will be tough to pull him to Cbus, but he is #1 on my list of LBs)
LB: Payton Pierece (right behind Brown on my wishlist and the JL connection helps, we are looking like a legit contender here)
LB: Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa (really like this kid and he keeps visiting, he would be a great addition to this class...I think we need 3 LBs in this class regardless, could be someone else but this would be my preferred LB class)
CB: Bryce West (probably a lock at this point, but one of the best CBs in the country and should be ready to play right away when he gets here)
CB: Aaron Scott (we could be close to calling it good with the CBs in Ohio this draft, Scott is the real deal and another probable commitment by the end of summer)
CB: Miles Lockhart (looking like we have a slight lead and he looks like a good prospect, I think we want 3 CBs in '24 but I don't know who the third might be...Woodyard is my favorite at CB but I am not confident at all on being in contention there)
S: KJ Bolden (I think the interest is real but it is going to be darn hard to get him to leave the south...but the staff is coming full court press knowing we need a gamechanger like Bolden in center field...good news is we may only need 1 safety with Styles and Stokes looking very promising at the position)
S: Garrett Stover (could end up at LB but I like him at S for now)

That would be 24 overall players and probably in line with the space we have for this class after the lackluster finish to '23. Looking through the list above, I would say I might be 55% or less on those predictions. But that is why it is called the "wayyyyy to early" projection, a lot of movement happens in the spring or early summer.

QB: Air Noland or Jadyn Davis (This is based of Air's visit on 3/31 if he gets an offer I think he is the QB in this class. Would love to see Jadyn put feelings aside and commit to the buckeyes)
RB: James Peoples (Stud reminds me a little bit of Dobbins watch this interview and you'll fall in love with this kid )
RB: Samuel Dixon (I think this is an OFFER and he will commit on his visit 3/7)
WR: Jeremiah Smith (Best Wideout prospect since Julio Jones. Day 1 starter and reminds me of Terrel Owens
WR: JoJo Trader (Think Hartline can win this one and if Miami is average next year again, lock it in. Would love to see JoJo move to def and be a lockdown corner)
WR: Terrance Moore (Blowing up lately and Hartline is after him and Hartline usually gets who he wants)
TE: Damarion Witten (Really love this kid's upside)
OL: Ian Moore (Great first commit on the o-line)
OL: Guerby Lambert (I know academics are number one for this kid, so I think Stanford is a frontrunner but I can see Frye winning this one)
OL: Deontae Armstrong (Ohio kid with big upside with his brother)
OL: Devontae Armstrong (Look above)
OL: Jordan Seaton (STUD number one guard in the class and I think the Buckeyes have been the leader)
OL: Marc Nave (Ohio kid with good upside)
DE: Elias Rudolph (Feel good about him being in the class, but that Florida move scares me a little bit)
DE: Booker Pickett JR (Really need to land this kid, need a pass rush specialist in this class and this kid is it)
DE: Marquise Lightfoot (No info on this one just threw in a random player because we need 3 D-ends in this class)
DT: David Stone (I'm going to copy RB's dt's prediction because I have zero guesses on this position. Think this kid is an NIL kid so I don't like the chances)
DT: Jayden Jackson (look above)
LB: Garrett Stover (He is LB all the way for me. Doesn't have the cover skills to be a safety imo)
LB: Payton Pierce (JL wins this battle, love this kids tape)
CB: Bryce West (I know everyone says it's going to be a battle with TTUN but this is a must get)
CB: Miles Lockhart (He will be a buckeye after he takes his visits)
CB: Zabien Brown (This one is a surprise, but I know he loves the buckeyes and this was a big offer for him)
CB: Aaron Scott (Just like West can't lose to this battle to TTUN or Oregon)
S: KJ Bolden (We lost the Downs battle last year so we deserve to win this one)
S: Vaboure Toure (Top 20 Safety in the class and I think we are the leaders here)

Notes: Really wanted to add Myles Graham or Micah Hudson to this list. The d-line recruiting is really scaring me if LJ doesn't land a very good/great class we might have to go look for another coach next year to replace him(just IMO)

26 player class for a ranking of 315.00 good for 2nd in the 2023 class team rankings. The numbers might be high, but they need a larger class this year

The Ohio State staff currently has the country’s No. 17 ranked 2024 recruiting class in the 247Sports Composite team recruiting rankings. That is ranking that will improve quite a bit over the coming months..

Right now the focus is on continuing to build relationships, evaluation and offering scholarships, and getting prospects scheduled to visit Ohio State wants Spring football practices start the week of March 6.

If one looks at the running list of prospects scheduled to visit Ohio State in March and April - it is a growing and impressive list and we are still a couple of weeks away from the start of spring practices. Today I look at six prospects that will be visiting Ohio State during the spring and give my prediction on each “if I had to predict right now.”

Very curious does anyone else think Day will go all in on Air Noland? He’s shooting up the rankings after a great junior season and during camps recently. Ranked 79 from on3, and the guys at 247 say he’s going to shoot up the rankings. 247 said he’s the best lefty they’ve seen since Tua

I don’t think Day will go all in on any recruit again! He just got burned by Raiola, and That could cost him Jadyn Davis. Don’t think he makes that mistake again. I see a wide net being cast all over in 2024. Especially with the strategy to not further pursue recruits who are NIL-focused. I can see the QB in 2024 being a name we don’t even know yet(I don’t see OSU getting Davis, Sayin or Noland, tbh)

An tOSU offer opens up alot of doors for other recruits, eg. other teams figure that if tOSU makes an offer, maybe they oughta look a tad harder at this kid.....and a player that commits early, to my way of thinking, either knows that's what he wants, or is using that as a 'place-holder' to look around from a perch of security. There are other QB coaches with as many chops as Day, not many, but a few. It appears to me, that a high level kid like Raiola wanted to help 'build a class' by being the bell cow recruit. However turned out that there are some other slicky-boy salesmen out there that offered more. Gets muddied with the introduction of NIL, so hard telling what true motivation(s) are. Last year lost a TE commitment that had been here forever, to Alabama, (never did find out what the draw was), who had 'helped' recruit some talent here as well. Agree, that's 'crootin'

Lockwood was a southern boy(Nashville, TN area) who wanted a Bama offer and to play for Saban more than anything. I can’t fault him for wanting to go to the regional(and of course national) power.

It is looking more and more likely that Jadyn Davis is going to commit to the weasels. Sucks but it is what it is.

Staff went all in on that clown Raiola, and it bit them.

Have a feeling they will learn from going full court on big position needs early.

I'm increasingly of the opinion that, far from being burned by Raiola, the Buckeyes narrowly avoided being burned by Raiola. He doesn't seem to me to be a very nice person.
Tbh, the minute he decommitted I forgot all about him and tuned him and his family out. No reason to give any energy to a kid OSU has 0 change of landing

Legit shot at the #1 class this cycle. Amazing start abs the momentum is real. Just have to close.

Idk about that. With NIL, OSU would be lucky to get to even a top 5 class
