It's quite a long way to get from "this isn't the SEC" to "somebody's head is going to roll." I'm sorry, but having the ultimate goal of demonstrating that we aren't the SEC isn't really necessary - that's self-evident. The proper course of action here is to look at the situation holistically and make thoughtful decisions - and firing Jim Tressel wouldn't qualify as a thoughtful decision under any circumstances. It would be knee-jerk.

Did I say JT? I said somebody....If the person withheld the issue and lied about it to the extent that Bruce Pearl did they should be fired regardless of who it is. If it is a scenario where a not too reliable source came with this info in passing then I can see giving JT the benefit of the doubt. However, if it comes out that this was deliberately withheld (and they knew that the allegations are true) then absolutely this individual should be let go.....

Another plausible scenario:

Jim Tressel is informed. He passes the information to Compliance. Complaince approaches the players and they lie. Compliance tries to dig further to corroborate the players or refute, and the feds say, "Stop. We're in the middle of our own investigation. You can do your thing when we tell you we're finished."

But Gene Smith did say that the Athletic Department knew nothing until December 8th, correct? So there's still some lying going on from the AD.

Of course, they could have just been saying this to the media, but I'd think that GS would have been upfront with the media under your scenario. I don't know....It just looks really bad from all angles, imo.

Just reading about this now and I'm not buying it. I honestly don't believe Coach Tressel would put the program in a position of weakness. I'll leave it at that.

I agree with this, but I also have a hard time believing Yahoo would break something like this without evidence. They're a legitimate news source, it isn't some blogger from Chicago this time.

Plausible.

Problem is we'd have lying players who's 5 games just got longer and the pushing back of the suspensions as anything but a win at all costs move by OSU is even harder to sell.

Let me say this....I would bet all my vcash, my house, cars, bank accounts, first born and a night with my wife that JT in know way lied or mislead the investigation or delayed the telling someone if he really thought the source was creditable....The integrity and character he has shown it would shock me if there was anything to this as far as JT goes...

I'm sure there are some reputable people at Yahoo. There have been many cases in the past where more reputable news sources have broken complete and utter garbage stories that never ended up being remotely true.

1. Back away from the "lying" word. It's inflammatory and belies a great deal of naivete.

2. Obviously there was an investigation - the players have been suspended for 5 games. They wouldn't have been, had there been no investigation. You may quibble with the time frame of the investigation, but it took place.

3. I repeat - look at the history of Jim Tressel - his decision-making, his impact on young men. I don't claim he's infallible; no one is. But he is a fine, upstanding man, and firing him would be just about as stupid a decision as I can imagine.

Let's accept that there is a possibility of mistakes being made that could affect our opinions of Coach Tressel that would still fall far short of "heads rolling" being a good idea.

Exactly how I feel. Just doesn't make any sense and would be a complete 180 of how JT has lived his life and how he asks others to live theirs as well.

Well then. A big pile of poop for dinner.

Sorry that has to spring up. The Press and talking heads will be all over this in the morning, if not already sharpening the knives over at ESpin. Sucks. The retraction - if it even comes - won't get any damn air play at all.
