Rivals/Scout/etc. National & Regional Rankings

Even big recruiting outfits like Rivals and Scout don't have the resources to cover the thousands of high school kids every year. So you get wild swings depending on who attends high visability camps. And a lot of recruiting is a crap shoot.

Trout performed well against Hand one on one so, what sense does that make? I don't get excited about guys going up and down in rankings. I want to see video of them looking good and then I will get excited. A video like Vonn Bell's excites me.

Typically regional scouts will have the greater emphasis in early season Top X amount lists - once a set amount is roughly agreed upon, 100/247/300, whatever it may be it goes with the national guys who start re-organizing. If the regional guys spot someone they'll add them for review. The national guys will always put an emphasis on the guys they see in person, and understandably so to a certain extent as seeing is believing. Some put too much emphasis on that and reward the guys who to go their camps to encourage better and top turnout, and most know who those are.

Major changes within are expected this time of year; throughout the rest of the year, anything like the 39 drop from Knox is abnormal as the shift from '13 to '14 is completed as far as full national reviews.

That being said, I have a very hard time seeing 14 recruits better than Tony Brown.

How the heck is Mr. Fatpants kicking our butts in recruiting right now? Seems like all the big time players are turning us down this year...

The same way 'Mr. Fatpants' got out to a lead last year & then got passed by.....it's only June.

Recovering from losing Zaire, Smith, Isaac, Heuerman, Brennamen, Montelus, Kugler, LTT, Anzalone, Smith, Gedeon, Dymonte is a tough assignment.

If only osu was led by a closer who typically has mediocre classes before those recruits start their senior year of HS.

The old complaint: Tressel can't finish? Now replaced by Urb can't start?

I thought Urb did okay in recruiting the last two years, especially since the pundits never factor in 3 fewer 'ships.

A higher profile in year two should help, especially when the offense gets uncorked. Success in the passing game will help. Defeating tSUN a second and third time will help. The longest winning streak in NCAA ball will help.

Or after 5 years, bring Tressel back as the early recruiting coordinator, to hand off midseason to Urb.

Yeah I understand that we made up ground but last year's class started off hotter as far as the rankings were concerned. We had around 6 ESPN150 players committed by this time last year. This year we have 1. I'm not saying Urban won't finish strong, just stating that this class might not be as highly regarded by the recruiting services.

ESPN recruiting coverage is on par with bleacher report, if that makes you feel any better. Maybe use a different site that isn't a total joke? That, of course, ignores the fact that all recruiting measuring sticks are hit or miss at best.

I would venture a guess that the biggest difference between lasts year's class and now is where they attended camp. Last year's recruits obviously attended a few more ESPN affiliated events.

The main difference I see is Bosa and a much less prolific midwest. Last year you had Jaylon Smith, Shane Morris, three bcs qbs in Ohio, Jalin Marshall, Dymonte Thomas, Cam Burrows, The Anzalones.

I would argue that last year's losses were a lot more painful and higher profile. We thought the tide was going to shift back to the Buckeyes. Instead we entered an era of recruiting dominance by the big three where all get their guys even when the others are hoarding great players.

As for Hoke, he lost out on Webb, Berger, Hubbard, and booker. He grabbed Ferns, Harris, Marshall and Winovich (the last a direct result of losing three future buckeyes)
