tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Very interesting class at this point for a variety of reasons
1. Not counting chickens but feeling very good about 3 big names, calling them darn near locks: Gibson, Harris and Burrell. No knock on MB but Gibson and Harris are elite and to have them as such strong leans yet uncommitted is fairly unique.
2. Several players I am not totally sure on their position: EGW, Josh Moore and Joshua Alabi. Heck for that matter you have to include Gibson.
3. The possibility of Brax and Spence coming back makes the final class count hard to predict. Before the season you absolutely had them gone in 2015 but now?

I see Josh Moore at an OT making that 4 in the class if Burrell is in. I think the class is done unless you pull a big name OT like flipping Richmond or possibly landing Prince. Will Alabi also end up on the O Line.....again, hard to predict. Something tells me the OL class ends with Burrell regardless.

I am working off the assumption that we see 6 new names. I don't want to get into how we fit 6 more in but there are MANY possibilities and this year sure seems ripe for a few wildcard scenarios to play out. My 4 out of 6 to finish are: Gibson, Harris, Burrrell, Cager. No clue on the last 2. So many options but my preference in order would be: Sweat, Kirk with Roundtree right there. If we landed the 4 I mentioned and any two of those 3 it would be sick. I think Kirk is a total long shot and the odds at Sweat are probably not great. No idea on Roundtree but I'd love to have him.

Warinner is responsible for the Philly, New Jersey, and New York area. You know the area we got Curtis Samuel and Noah Brown from last season. He is also brought in when recruiting O-lineman, like J. Jones, Lisle, and Knox. He recruited the late Matt James to ND. For every recruit that doesn't like his approach, there's going to be high school players and parents who like his style. You have to remember he spent many years at Army so I'm sure that's influenced his demeanor.

Warinner is terrible.. those four guys he lost from last year can't play (on Saturdays anymore)
and only two of them start...
that Mewhort guy was very mean to those guys he pushed to the ground last night

His door should have a banner... "I lost all my linemen to the NFL"
and the printer can keep the file cuz he's gonna print another banner for Johnson

Urban 'we only have 4-5 more spots avail'
Harris?
Burrell?
Gibson?
Sweat?
Gallimore?
a surprise?

I would maybe say 5-6 now with the unfortunate Spence situation...the sixth may be Carlton Davis since nobody expects that to stick. Sweat I would say is a long shot at this point. Harris, Burrell, and Gibson I really like our odds on. Gallimore is supposedly an OU lean but we are in the thick of it. I would say Cager is a very real option, as we need a true WR in this class and he fits the bill.

Then I would say to look out for some decommits Urbs targets at the end of the year (see Drew Richmond or Sh'mar Kilby), we always seem to get in on 1 or 2. Or there could be a surprise like Roundtree, Kirk, Prince, Wariboko, Wilkins, Peete, Beckner, Malik Jefferson, Gustin, Tavarus McFadden, etc. Those are all guys that have legitimate interest in us (some to varying degrees right now) who are planning on deciding later. If we get commits from Gibson, Burrell, and Harris by November-ish, that could be huge in bringing in a couple of those guys. Plus since there are limited spots left, we can really knock the doors down for the remaining elite guys.

Looking at who is left on the board and the needs for this class, I would like to see two more OL (Burrell and one of Richmond/Prince/Wariboko...Josh Moore is projected at OL so really we have three and I really like Feder and Schmidt). Then Gibson at QB/ATH and Harris as our sole RB. That leaves 1-2 spots. I don't want to knock our DB class because I think it has potential, but I see mostly projects and getting an elite guy like Roundtree at safety would be some nice insurance. As for any remaining spot, I love Gustin's versatility and if we have a legit shot at Jefferson at LB, I think even with the big numbers last year at LB I would like another for some depth...no guarantee Berger comes back full strength. Regardless of being stacked at Pivot right now, Kirk is my #1 on the wishlist because I think he may be the best player in the country pound for pound. However, I think A&M has a comfortable lead on us and we have to do some work...him cancelling his official doesn't help. In any event, I think we will close out with headliners...we started this class off with many less-than household names but guys that can be great players down the road with development. Our classes in 2013 and 2014 enabled us to do that. But to close out, I think we're going to make big noise.

With offers going out to Bowen and Stump, things just got interesting to me, especially at OL. We obviously have one LT in Feder and a RT/G in Schmidt. I also think that Moore is a future T prospect. Bowen is definitely a tackle, so it appears the staff wants at least one more tackle and I couldn't agree more. Lots of smoke out there that Richmond is ripe for a flip to OSU, so I am thinking perhaps the staff will slow-play Bowen and see what Richmond does. My guess is that the staff will take one more true tackle and then another interior guy (or a tackle that can slide down to guard ala Schmidt)...that guy ideally is Burrell, as he has the feet and size for a tackle, but I see him thriving at guard. My ideal OL class is Feder, Schmidt, Moore, Richmond, and Burrell....that would be an instant shot in the arm for our OL in terms of competition and depth for next season. Plus you throw that class in with J. Jones, Knox, Trout, M. Jones, and Taylor...downright filthy potential down the road (also Lisle is still young).

For WR, I am stumped (pun intended). We've had two really good WR classes and it appears the staff likes what we have here and will only take 1-2, which is fine. I think EGW is a future pivot unless we get Kirk (I don't like our odds though), so there is one spot for a true WR it appears, particularly after the Alexander commitment. I really like the offer to Stump and I think he is very similar to Cager, although Cager has the height advantage by a couple inches. I would be very surprised if the staff would accept both commitments.

Wow, so why does it seem like Stump is the flavor of the month all of the sudden after months of Cager love? Is it now a competition to see who commits first for the staff and other is out? Funny how recruiting always oddly works. After FNL I figured Cager was the big WR for the class, and that his relationship with Torrance Gibson only helped that cause. Is the on field comparison of Stump and Cager that similar to where either would be a reward?

I think it was as simple as the staff seeing Stump in person and not being able to pass on him. Impressive kid who has improved a lot this season and is impressing on the highest level of HS football possible. Not sure they accept both but I am guessing they at least saw Stump as the Cager equivalent.

Question: If we win the battle for the services of Damien Harris, can we rightfully declare that Stan Drayton, Tim Hinton, and Urban Meyer owns Kentucky in recruiting in their state?
Nope, not in the least IMO.We missed out on Michael Bush, Quick, Matt Elam, Barker, Jason Hatcher

:edit I know Bush was previous to this staff but still...
