2017 tOSU Offense Discussion

But it worked for him at UF so GE thinks he can recreate at OSU...

Even then, it really only worked for roughly three seasons. '06 Tebow was a gimmick. '07 they lost five games, but that really wasn't Tebow's fault; the defense was a sieve. '08 was obviously the second natty. '09 worked until it didn't when he got smoked by Saban, and the wheels fell off in 2010.

There's a reason that no one runs single wing any more. If Meyer refuses to hand the reins over to Wilson and insists on continuing to try to pound a square peg into a round hole, the wheels could very well fall off this year.

My greatest fear is that not enough changes happen over the next four weeks, and we cruise to victory on fool's gold, only to have a very rude awakening at Iowa.

Oh the rude awakening will happen much earlier the that. Strike UNLV I dont see any true gimme right now. I don't like the feeling I have for this team because I have this feeling the wheels are coming off. Which is weird because it's just one game that we lost and I've never felt like this after a loss.

Maybe it's all the finger pointing, the people calling out JT, or the fact that we don't have an identity somehow even though we've been running this offense for 6 years now.

Seriously how the hell do we not know who we are on offense when we've had six years to perfect this thing

That is because it isn't just one loss that we are feeling frustrated by here.

It's losing 2 of the last 3 games and an offensive shit show for 11 of the last 12 quarters we've seen them on the field. Probably more if I cared to really remember it all.

Exactly... people say worse case is 3 losses. No, it could really be a lot worse then that. Iowa, PSU, Scum, Sparty and even Maryland could all potentially be land mines.

I don't see nothing changing on offense and I don't see the fixes being fast enough on defense. How a team with this much talent is at these cross roads is mind boggling

3-4 different OCs since Urban has been here, and all trying to install their own offensive philosophies while still having to run what the boss wants in big games. And when it doesn't work, they get all the blame...
It's no wonder JT is gun shy, and having issues. Think of having that many new bosses, but your big boss wants different plays run in certain games(that you probably know aren't going to work all that well). Urban's NC, past wins in big games give him a big pass, but you can see from the film, and it's gotten out in the open from other coaches that he hasn't changed his schemes personally since Tebow, and now the rest of the country knows it. JT is a good QB, in a bad scheme for his talents, hell this offense is and could be great, but is being used badly. Everyone's love of the "deep ball" has clouded this offense. F the damn long ball, and run JK Weber until the wheels fall off. And when they need a breather run Campbell, McCall(when healthy), Williams and then Barrett for balance. And then watch a nice deep pass open up. If I were any opposing DC, I'd just play off the WRs and have a LB or DE spy JT, and I know I'd be in the game for almost the whole game. It's sad but predictable at this point, and I don't think anyone would've guessed Meyer as predictable, until now...

Throw into the mix of uncertainty J.T.'s injury causing the loss of those games, adding in the following season with the competition for the starting slot, compounded by the musical chairs at OC--he hasn't had the benefit of stability. Could be a challenge to fully develop under those circumstances.

I just want to see us tie some plays together and not look like we're standing there trying to figure out which blade of our Swiss Army knife to use. Just fcuking pull one of them out and use it. The cute plays will be that much more effective if you come out and blow their D-line off of the ball. Maybe some teams can win throwing to open up the run, but I don't think we can or should and it's not necessary for us.

Yes just run the ball first and the passing game can develop from there. Hard to defend the pass when you bite on play action which we learned last week.

Another thing we need to study what the big 12 does for offense because my god is OU and Okie Lite good on that side of the ball. Throw in Texas Tech, Texas and the old Baylor and it's just oozing production on that side of the ball

Problem is, OSU hasn't and isn't designed like any of those teams. Urban and staff have recruited and developed players along the OL to be able to maul opposing DLs. We have studs at RB and hardly use them. Our WRs are honestly the weak link because they're playing defenses who know they're rarely going to see the ball in favorable positions. Texas Tech, UT, OU, fake OSU, WVU, Baylor, etc are more finesse and soft teams(excluding OU with that massive OL) who fling the ball around because most have TX QBs who ran out of spread and run and shoot offenses in HS. They let their passing game set up their running, and their runs are usually trying to catch a team off balance who expects throws.

We shouldn't have to study any team, if anything we should be going over the films of Wilson's former teams(I.e. past OU and IU). Abandon running JT so much, run the spread but with a power run style, and catch teams off balance with a well timed slant, post, fly, because you can't utilize play action constantly running your QB. We can win many big games on the backs of our RBs, heck Bama has lived on that philosophy for years. And when your OL averages 6'6 300lbs+, you let them destroy the guys in front of them

Step 1: Face Big-12 defenses weekly

We shouldn't have to study any team? Screw that we should study the best offensive staffs in America because UFM is not a top offensive mind. He's an excellent motivator and knows how to pull everything together to get great results but we should always be willing to take an idea and make it our own.

I'm not saying scratch everything we do and run OU's offense but rather see why their passing games are so good and see if we can implement features of it to feed off our strong run game. We know we can run the ball and I think that's why we try to force the issue throwing the ball because frankly it's boring to call 4 of 5 plays as runs and we have this urge to be balanced.

I have no doubt our WRs are as physically gifted as OUs or Okie Lite who go for 300-400 yards passing per game. So we should be figuring out why can they do it and why can't we.

Spare me the big 12 defense talk because Tech Texas went for what 700 yards passing while we went for like 150? I realize we won and TT didn't but it should merit figuring out why they found so much success and why we struggled.

Again I'm not saying kill our offense and get TTs offense in here and start throwing for 400 yards... I'm saying figure out why they have so much space when they throw and figure out how they structure the throw game in hopes we can easily throw for 200+ per game against quality opponents
