2018 QB Battle Discussion

i find Burrow's lack of outspoken behavior interesting. Most would say that is because he's planning to transfer and is keeping quiet. I am personally hoping it's because he is putting all of his attention into kicking ass and winning the spot for this season.

Obviously, whoever wins the spot I'm going to be 100% behind to lead us to the Natty

While we are certain to come out of this with a great QB, it'll be a bummer if their being here at the same time causes one of them to transfer--both of these guys have the potential to be the best OSU QB in decades (and this is coming from a huge Troy Smith fan).
Agreed. Unfortunately this is new era in CFB. Why stay when you can play somewhere else, especially in Burrow's case! I can't fault it, but I would love to see both stay, as a solid backup is so important in football

Couple things..

UFM seems to talk about Tate a lot. Particularly about him being special.

However he did slip near the end of his interview and said they have a different skill set at QB now... then said "well potentially"

Also talked about using Tate in non QB roles.

Sounds like Haskins has the edge but Tate is making Plays

OHIO STATE QUARTERBACKS FILLING VOID LEFT BY J.T. BARRETT, STILL LOCKED IN “DAY-TO-DAY” COMPETITION

92199_h.jpg

Whoever the heir apparent to J.T. Barrett will be at Ohio State is going to have to stand out in a crowded group of signal-callers.

So far, that has yet to happen.

Following the Buckeyes' Friday scrimmage, Urban Meyer met with the media on Monday morning, and said he is waiting for one of Ohio State's three quarterbacks – Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow, Tate Martell – to take the starting job, yet none of them have emerged as a clear leader.

"You wish one would take it, and that has not happened," Meyer said. "I think the quarterback situation, you'd wish one would take it, but then again, you like having the day-to-day competition, which is what I'm seeing. They started very poorly today, and the quarterback, receivers got much better as the day went on, which is encouraging."

Perhaps the reason the quarterbacks are struggling is because Meyer is holding some of Ohio State's more veteran receivers out of team drills in order to keep them healthy. That inconsistency with the receivers could be affecting the timing, but Meyer said that is something the Buckeye signal-callers will have to work through as spring practice winds down.

"I'm not making excuse for the quarterback, but I'm protecting some of the older receivers, and it looks like, it's awful when you start pulling those guys out, so that's an alarm for down the road. We've got to get much better," Meyer said. "But they were better today. The receivers played better."

Meyer isn't completely discouraged with the quarterbacks, however. Despite not having a set starter, or even a leader in the clubhouse, Meyer said he feels more comfortable at quarterback now than he did a month ago when Ohio State opened spring ball, as the Buckeyes move on from the Barrett era.

"We're not there. You can see the void, but at times you can see it get much better," Meyer said. "We're much better today in practice nine, I believe it is, than practice two or three."

While Meyer didn't name any champions on the offensive end from Friday's scrimmage, he did mention that redshirt freshman Tate Martell had a particularly good performance on Monday as players returned from the holiday weekend.

However, as has been the trend all spring, the other quarterbacks continue to push back as no one has emerged as 'the guy.'

Football: Ohio State lacks frontrunner at quarterback with Spring Game on horizon

IMG_5865-swkntl-530x353.jpg

Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow have been through this before — just last year, in fact.

Last March, the quarterbacks went back and forth, battling each practice to become J.T. Barrett’s backup. Neither won. They both played well in the Spring Game and entered the summer tied in the race to be second in line for playing time.

But a broken hand near the end of fall camp submerged Burrow’s chances of becoming Barrett’s backup and handed Haskins the backup role.

Even when Burrow returned to action, he entered after Haskins late in blowout games. Then later in the year, Haskins took advantage of the opportunity and completed a comeback win in Ann Arbor, Michigan, against the Wolverines after being thrust into action in the second half after Barrett suffered an injury.

Despite this season’s quarterback battle having immeasurably higher stakes than last year’s, Haskins and Burrow seem to be stuck in the same place — a tie. But this time, they are tied atop the depth chart. And this year, a third quarterback — redshirt freshman Tate Martell — has engaged them in competition.

Head coach Urban Meyer said he is taking the quarterback competition “day-by-day.” He said Martell had a better practice Monday, Burrow had a better performance in an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday, then Haskins “came back” and played better.

Despite the offense not having a set leader at quarterback, Meyer seemed unconcerned with the ongoing uncertainty behind center.

“You’d wish one would take it,” Meyer said. “But then again, you like having the day-to-day competition, which is what I’m seeing.”
