2018 QB Battle Discussion

I really want to want Burrow. I really, really do. He had a great day and he can be a great tOSU qb... but there is magic in some of Haskins' throws, legit magic. They get there tight, on a line, in a hurry, and where only the receiver can catch them. I've not seen passes like these from our qb's. TMart has some magic, too, some jazz, a quicker version of JTB. I'll be happy with any of them, but I'd like to see a Haskins-Martell combo, even knowing that if you could only have one, Burrow should be the one.
I prefer the guy with the best completion percentage rather than the guy who completes fewer passes but some of them are "magic." I don't know what the coaches see in practice but Burrow was the best QB on the field in both of the last two spring games and was Barrett's backup before he got hurt.

I agree with everything here, except Haskins would be my starter. Haskins gives the Buckeyes a different offensive identity. My fear with Burrow at the helm is a continuation of the same old play calling, including the infuriating rollout that they ran with him yesterday. We have an amazing wealth of talent at the RB position and WR position, let’s use it.
The offensive identity comes from Urban Meyer. He's not changing his offense. Cardale out front shoulda told ya.

Haskins went 5/6 (83%) in the Michigan game when OSU was down. Does the spring game outweigh the Michigan performance?

Spring games where they are throwing to Elijah Gardner and Jaylen Harris (7th and 8th on depth chat) supersede everything. I digress.

Haskins played great in the Michigan game. Maybe Burrow would have too. We can't know. I remember Haskins coming in against Illinois and promptly turning the ball over.

I don't know what the coaches have seen. What I've seen in two spring games is that Burrow performed better in both. I think it would be a mistake to decide the competition based solely on the Michigan game.

I still get the feeling that it's going to be Haskins. But I don't know. I'll be happy with either as the starter. I won't feel great if one of them transfers and leaves just little Tate Martell as the backup.

Plus the ugly pick 6 against UNLV... the one thing I've noticed with Haskins is he does trust his arm a little too much sometimes.

A large part in becoming the starter will be avoiding the mistakes. I believe that handily benefits Burrow and also when it comes to accuracy that also benefits Burrow.

Burrow did lose the job because of injury, he is more mobile, he is the more accurate, does seem to avoid the costly turnover, and has seemed to be highlighted as a leader more so then Dwayne.

The fact that it's not settled even though Dwayne played well against SCUM leads me to believe Burrow probably out played Dwayne this spring. Dwayne is going to have to knock it out of the park in fall camp I think to hold of Burrow.

Actually Haskins was the better QB in the 2017 spring game 26 for 37 70% 293 yds and 3 TDs
While Burrow was 14 of 22 63% 262 yds and 3 TDs. Nothin is out there to prove that either is more accurate against 1st team big ten defenses. All of you are reading so much into spring game stats with literally no rush and with a sporadic roster of players. Haskins tried more vertical throws which leads to a lower completion percentage and the receivers he was throwing to are guys that don't create separation (Harris, Victor and Gardner) making his throws to Harris and Victor the most impressive. Haskins did miss on Mclaurin who had a step on Sheffield but also probably should have had his TD to Victor batted down. Burrow was the better QB on the day but he also benefited yardage wise on a blown coverage to McCall and a long play to Campbell on a crossing route where he picked up a huge chunk after the catch. But Burrow still proved to be better percentage wise and yardage wise in the game. He under threw the wide open McCall and Victor on a fade down the sideline. Everyone on here is still putting too much weight on a glorified practice than coming into a hostile game on the road against our rival and we were losing. 3 things are leading me to believe it's Haskins job: recruits, cris carter and hartline all making comments about Haskins future and not Burrows, burrow being healthy after his broken finger and the coaches still rolled with Haskins, Meyer saying he owes Burrow an answer when he clearly would word it differently if Burrow had the job sewed up. A draw at the QB between Burrow and Haskins gives the nod to the younger player.

What is out there to prove that one is more accurate over a whole season than the other Dwayne completed 70% of 57 throws last year and 70% in last years spring game. Burrow completed 63% of 11 last year and 63% in last years spring game and 68% in this years.

Haskins completion percentage is actually better than Burrow between the last 2 spring games and last season. Haskins is 75/113 66.4% and Burrow 36/55 65.5% not sure where the more accurate comments for burrow keep confidently coming from. Whats to say Haskins just wasn't off for a day and was just trying to make some plays over the top instead of taking checkdowns.

A couple thoughts...what would JB need to hear to convince him not to transfer? I would imagine it would have to be more than he has won the starting job for now...is UFM prepared to commit to season starter status? And how advantageous is it to have a QB unencumbered by classes?

Both QBs have raised they're game and that could only be a good thing. Very little to no separation between the two. Let them keep pushing against each other as long as possible. My one thought is Haskins performance on the field in the toughest of circumstances, the Michigan game. That gives him the edge for me.

Martell is way behind in the pass game. He is a terrific leader and has a fire to compete.
Eventually Martel will be a fine QB.
