Braxton Miller vs. Devin Gardner (complete with hyperbole!!!!1!!1!)

Bad comparisons.

Barkley wasn't being hyped as much by the California recruiting "gurus" as much as Braxton is getting hyped by people from Ohio first of all.

Barkley wasn't completing 45% of his passes either. He was in the mid 60% range, which is what you expect. Barkley also had a terrific JR year where he really put up some monster stats and completed like 70% of his passes. Braxton's JR year he completed around 50% of his passes before he went down with the injury.

The film tells me exactly what I thought about Braxton before I knew of his stats. He's very talented, but he's pretty raw and people need to chill.

I think almost everyone is aware of the fact that Miller is raw. Most everything I've read here acknowledges that he is definitely a candidate to be redshirted. Check out the Devin Gardner thread where folks in the know discuss the fact that OSU chose to offer QB's other than Gardner in order to have a more polished passer available in 2011/2012 after Pryor has departed rather than having successive years with high-ceiling "projects" at QB.

The fact that he may not be one of the 5 best players in the state doesn't mean he isn't the best prospect of the bunch.

His recruiting hype was nothing compared to Clausen's, or even Vince Young's.

And again, nobody from California was calling Barkley the best CA prospect ever or the best prospect out of CA in 25 years.

People from Ohio ARE saying that kind of hyperbole about Braxton though.

Braxton isn't a Michigan lean and even if he was I would be saying the same things I am right now. He's got tons of talent but he's raw, and people need to chill out on the "best ever from Ohio" stuff.

Who is/was a better QB prospect out of Ohio?

This is kind of a serious question. I don't know the answer, but mainly because I haven't followed recruiting long. California's list of all-time QBs is bigger than Ohio's, I can guarantee you that..

SoCal is a blue-chip QB pipeline. Ohio is often headlined by guys like Hartline, Belton or Nicely. There are a handful of sleepers that emerge from ohio, but a 5-star QB is quite rare. California's fails to produce a great QB about as often as Ohio actually has one.

This current season is Braxton's junior year.

I wonder how mh20 has so much time to spend here with such a pressing need to chill out so many UM fans excited about Gardner.

Have yet to see a supposed "HS recruiting guru" from Michigan make the claim that Gardner is "the best HS player from Michigan ever!" let alone a Michigan fan.

Michigan leaves the hyperbole to the "Terrelle runs a 4.33!" OSU crowd.

Yeah, we can definitely see the lack of hyperbole from the Michigan crowd right now. That ND game over the weekend resulted in zero hyperbole.

Respond to the actual points that were made. I hate when people ignore points and respond to relatively meaningless comments.

I believe that Clausen was more highly touted than Pryor, who was equally touted as Barkley. Because of the fishbowl we live (and surf in), Pryor had more hype, because and only because he was a Buckeye recruiting target. Barkley basically got zero pub in the midwest, because he was a left coast player, and we don't hear/see/read much about them until they say, "I'm interested in the Buckeyes" on the sheets they fill out in HS.

Don't want to start a firestorm by saying that midwest doesn't produce great QBs because all we do is run the football, and Cali does, because the colleges throw and throw and throw. Midwest has produced more and better runners (?!) because they do it more. Same for California kids. And Florida. Texas, not so much, more of the runners a la the midwest. (Quick, name the last great passer from Texas). Look at the colleges and what the HS coaches see is what they try to emulate, because that is the market for their product (articulation to the local college), HS players.

Absolutely no hard data to back this up, but plenty of years of observing and generalizations......

Is this 'your guy isn't as good as you - er I mean these other people - think he is' tirade ending sometime soon?

Are you also rushing over to calm people down who are excited about Bolden, despite his lack of production?
Michigan leaves the hyperbole to the "Terrelle runs a 4.33!" OSU crowd.
Oh good, more nonsense that has NOTHING to do with the topic.

Go read a michigan fan blog, you'll see how much they hyperbolize Devin Gardner.

A) Gardner is pretty darn good.

B) I have read them, and not once did I see anybody make the claim that Devin was the best QB or the best HS player to ever come out of Michigan EVER or in the past 25 years.

Duane Long, a guy that all of you guys actually look to, said on his blog that Braxton is the best HS football player he's ever seen in Ohio, EVER.

Have not seen that kind of fellatio on Gardner one time yet, and he's actually committed to Michigan.
