Cleveland Browns (2012 season)

After the first 5 rounds, Heckert turned over the draft to his son Griffin. It was Griffin that made the last 3 picks. So the secret is out. Heckert won his fantasy league 3 years in a row with his son picking the entire draft. Kid got all his smarts from his mom.

Like every draft we won't know how good this draft is until 2-3 years from now. I think they made some solid picks to make the team younger and bolster both the OL and DL. I guess like everyone else I am confused with regard to only 1 WR being taken and I also thought that we needed some additions for our defensive backfield plus the Hughes pick is a real head scratcher even if he did graduate from Gahanna.

I have noticed where everyone thinks that the Steelers and Ratbirds had very good drafts. The Steelers just added a bunch of big boys and really so did the Browns. In looking at Baltimore's draft, I really don't recognize many of their picks. Cincinnati had a nice draft but nothing really earth shattering. I guess I will just wait and see how things pan out.

Let's remember we did sign 2 Buckeyes:)

I find this concerning to say the least. When Heckert was hired all I heard was this guy built the Eagles into a very good team. Great talent evaluator...blah blah blah. What the [censored] does this team have to do to get someone with a basic knowledge of football evaluation.

Why should it be concerning? Holmgren is the big cheese and it's not like he just walked off the farm. He has experience in evaluating talent and was the GM with the Seahawks so he understands the process. To think he just showed up on draft day to enjoy the festivities is ridiculous. Like any other organization, the main guy is going to listen to his people but ultimately he has the final say.

I am not sure how this draft will play out, but I do think this management team has a plan. Whether the plan works out or not we will know in the next year or two but I for one think that had the previous regimes built the team through this process we wouldn't be where we are now. I give these guys credit for sticking to their guns and not caving to the fanbase.

Well, I sure as hell hope they have a plan and that the plan is to win. That's a given.

We are questioning whether their plan will work. I'm quite confident it will be an unmitigated disaster; but at least the next front office and coaching staff will have a running back to build around starting in 2013.

No offense Mon Ami, but do you remember your opportunism six hours ago about, the Browns having two more top 100 picks? After I read that, our two fourth rounds picks from last year stuck in my mind. We could have drafted both those guys in the sixth, if not seventh round last year.

This reminds me of a rudderless ship. The Browns drafting over the last, at least 5 years has just been horrible. I don't ever recall hearing anything remotely close to a plan :(

no offense to you sir but i never wanted more picks...two extra 7th round picks means dick to me

I am not sure where you get unmitigated disaster from. At least these guys have been able to draft players that can actually PLAY in the NFL. All you have to do is look at is who is left in the league from all the Butchie and Savage drafts. That picture alone shows how f-cked up this organization was. You may not like who they drafted but for the most part these guys have been able to hit on good number of players.

You may be right about the impending outcome, but I think that we are heading in the right direction assuming we don't have one of these guys tear an Achilles or get a staph infection

Nothing to complain about until draft time.

And I was perfectly comfortable with their approach until they went all in on Weeden and wasted a 3rd-round pick on a defensive tackle they could have gotten in the 6th or 7th round with some receivers still on the board. I even spent about an hour and a half vehemently defending their decision to trade up to get T-Rich up until the point in time when they threw away a first-round pick on a 28-year-old quarterback who has concrete feet.

But let's not pretend like they haven't whiffed on some picks (Hardesty, McCoy, Marecic/Release of Vickers). And let's not pretend like they wouldn't have been better off setting a stack of money on fire rather thank spending it on Jake Delhomme.

They've now had 3 drafts and 3 offseasons of free agency to fix the gaping hole in the receiver corps.

They've now repeated the same mistake Phil Savage made with Brady Quinn by getting desperate and reaching for quarterback in the first round. It's so eerily similar that it's vomit-inducing.

It is not an overstatement or an overreaction to say their careers now depend on the success of Brandon Weeden. Let's see if you're still trying to distinguish this regime from the prior regimes when he flames out.

if you dislike the Browns so much why do you keep following and being so negative

The Browns suck and they will always suck. All we as fans can do is complain. The only thing that will stop the complaining is for them to win. Thats it. It is a simple recipe. I am so proud of my kids, they all told me that I can take the Browns while they are taking the Steelers. If I had done similar to my dad, I would have had years of celebration and happiness instead of decades of failures and depression. I would love to walk around and be proud and be able to brag about my team but all they have left me with is complaints.

ALL THEY GOT TO DO IS WIN. and I really think that their absence in the early FA moves and their bonehead picks this draft tells me that we are in for decades more of depression. This is the life of a Cleveland Sports fan. Drink more beer and complain.

actually, weeden's a fairly decent athlete. he ran a 4.9 40 and had a cone time in the area of justin blackmon's. cleveland didn't give up a 2nd and future 1st to acquire this qb either. the only reason weeden fell was his age, unlike quinn who fell due to a lack oftalent. if you're going to melt, at least be factually accurate.

In the grand scheme of things, following draft weekend. I'm not completely disgruntled. TRich and Weeden are instant upgrades to the offense. The Oline is decent. Just really really wish a WR was in their plans somewhere.

That 3rd round pick on John Hughes, though. Can't stop shaking my head at that. Complete disbelief. :shake:

In the end though, I mean, really- does it even matter?
