Glen Mason (official thread)

somebody wondered about the reaction of Mandel...

Finally, I?d be remiss not to mention the firing of Minnesota?s Glen Mason ? so ludicrous on so many levels. Yes, I made a joke about his coaching abilities just 24 hours earlier. No, I can?t fault Gophers fans for being frustrated with not getting over the hump. But for AD Joel Maturi to say Mason lost his job for blowing the Insight Bowl? Give me a break. You?re telling us you made a major decision about the future of your program based on blowing a big lead in a third-tier bowl game? That?s nuts!

Furthermore, Maturi just gave the guy an extension less than a year earlier. And what kind of season did he really expect after losing a first-round running back (Laurence Maroney) and pair of All-American linemen that were pretty much the centerpiece of your past three teams. You?re Minnesota. You?re going to have down seasons. I wish Maturi luck in the coaching search, but I can?t imagine too many A-list coaches will be lining up for that job.

People have been talking up the job Mason has done at Minnesota, and relatively speaking he may have overachieved for being at Minnesota.

If you look at the talent he's had the past few years though, I think you could argue that he's underachieved. Minnesota plays a cupcake schedule. They have consistently had NFL talent at RB, TE, and to a lesser extent, on the OL. I know their defense is soft, but if you have that kind of talent at those positions, you should be able to win more consistently.

What about Larry Coker? This might be the best job that Coker would have the juice to get right now, and Coker is about the best guy on the market that Minnesota would be able to land. Plus the timing is perfect. Could be a good match - even if it means Minnesota would still suck.

True, but shouldn't Mason be congratulated for bringing NFL talent to Minny?

Here's another take on Minny's decision, from the rather verbose Matthew Zemek at CFN.

Before the year 2006 officially ended, another fascinating chapter unfolded in the world of coach firings. If this were a 15-round heavyweight bout, the scorecard might have indicated a draw.

Absolutely, he deserves credit for that. He's done a good job of recruiting and of coaching up his players especially when it comes to rushing the football. Unfortunately, he's just not that good of a gameday coach.

Mad about Mason
Seeing longtime friend Glen Mason get the ax at Minnesota was painful for Tressel.
Mason, a former OSU player and assistant, was fired by the Gophers after going 64-57 in 10 years with seven bowl appearances.
"That's terrible," Tressel said of the decision. "I'm disappointed. He's done a great job there."

Former Minnesota football coach Glen Mason is being considered for a game analyst's job with the new Big Ten network, according to the Chicago Tribune. Another OSU graduate, former running back Robert Smith, is in the mix for a studio analyst job, the newspaper reported.

Mason lands booth job with Big Ten

Associated Press

Former Gophers football coach Glen Mason will be in the broadcast booth this fall.

Fired last New Year's Eve by the University of Minnesota after his team blew a 31-point lead in an Insight Bowl loss to Texas Tech, Mason has been named to one of the Big Ten Network's gameday announcing teams with play-by-play man Mark Neely. The newly created network made its announcers for the upcoming season official on Tuesday.

The Big Ten Network launches programming on Aug. 30. It has not yet been picked up by several major cable television distributors due to price disagreements.

The Gophers have at least three home games scheduled to be broadcast by the network: Bowling Green on Sept. 1, Miami of Ohio on Sept. 8, and Illinois on Nov. 3.
