How Do You Handle Worthless In-Laws

It's getting better. Last night my sister calls me to see if I can help her get 4 grand back from a "Loan Modification" lawyer she'd hired to help refinance her loan. After about three minutes of surfing I sent her these links

Don?t Fall for Bogus Loan Modification Specialists!
Contact 13: Loan Modification Scam - KTNV ABC,Channel 13,Las Vegas,Nevada,News,Weather,Sports,Entertainment,KTNV.com,Action News .:.
Nevada Loan Modification CEO Sentenced to Prison | Loans - Credit - Debt - LoanSafe.org

She gave them the money up front, they never did anything for them and they can't get their money back. They didn't even save any of the paperwork. Best part is it was all buffoon's idea. Whenever I asked her a question she had to relay it to him because he won't speak with me. He doesn't like me for some reason. It turns out that they didn't pay their mortgage for two months so that they could pay this guy.
Where did they come up with 4K? Two months of mortgage payments.. must be a helluva nice house

Sorry to hear about your situation man.

Needless to say, if it was in fact a "lawyer" involved and not a scam saying it was a lawyer, you can always file a bar complaint. I assume that it was just a scheme to get their $$$ that was either just a PO Box or a monthly rental store front with a phone and a couple of desks.

Sucks that they prey on people in trouble. You should have seen the number of people fleeced by the vultures who moved in on Katrina's aftermath. People lost millions to folks who just took money to fix your home/roof/insurance problem and then just disappeared. Lots of elderly got taken.

Ouch. Sounds like they could use a real loan modification specialist now. Good thing I only charge half as much as that dastardly scam artist. Give me her name and number and I'll see if I can [strike]rip her off, too[/strike] help her out of this mess.

Actually their mortgage was only $1,200 a month which would've been easily affordable if they'd managed their money like adults and buffoon had a job, any job. From reading the article it looked like most scammers were only pulling in $1,500-$3,000 but they got them for $4,000. Must've seen them coming. How did they find this place? One of buffoon's pot buddies recommended them.
Here's the amazing part. When my sister sold her house in '05 (about the same time she met buffoon) she put $162,000 profit in her pocket. As of today she has nothing, not even anything to show for her life's work (she's 40) minus her modest furniture and her car. She bought buffoon a truck as a wedding present and it was inoperable within two years. I've never seen a guy that got into so many accidents. He never even changed the oil.

Latest update of buffoonery. If you recall I told you that before they found this new place (which I found out this morning is one of the worst neighborhoods in Las Vegas) buffoon felt insulted and unwanted because of some brutal honesty and construct criticism from my mother and insisted on moving into a weekly extended stay until they found other arrangements. I found out this morning that they paid for the week but after one night they left without a refund and went back to my mother's. Another $200 just pissed into oblivion. I guess they couldn't take the stench, the heat the noise and the roaches.

Thankfully neither gamble which is surprising. My sister occasionally plays bingo with our mother. Also my sister has 19 years at her job, she'll be eligible for retirement benefits, it would be stupid to leave now.
Before she met buffoon she took very good care of herself. She traveled, each football season she would go to two or more bowl games (she's a HUGE football fan) trips to Mexico, Hawaii... I really couldn't explain how she's let this guy into her life and let him drag her into the bowels of hell. It's inexplicable.

My sister married this bum about 5 years ago and in that time she's gone from owning her own home to living in those pay by the week extended stays. She sold her house when it's value tripled back in '05, they rented a place where the rent was more than the mortgage they were paying in their house, they bought stupid things, the money ran out, they got evicted, she gets knocked up not once but twice, they buy a mobile home in a trailer park (and payed way too much, they got in with family loaned money), he gets laid off from his room service job and decides to get back for a year or three spending his days smoking pot, watching cartoons and playing x-box, the get evicted there too, they move in with my mother who insults him by suggesting her should quit pot and look for a job of any kind and now they're in one of those sleazy joints with the drug dealers and hookers.
She picked him, she's let him call the shots so she's as much to blame but the guy couldn't be more of a loser. We all want to help but we have all decided that she needs to figure out for herself that this guy has taken her for a long ride and it's just going to get uglier. Every choice he makes is not only poor but the worst possible. Has anybody ever had to watch this same train wreck with a loved one?

Sounds like she is codependent. My mother went through similar garbage. I'm staunchly agnostic, but I will tell you that the only thing that has kept her out of that rut is renewed faith--it works for some people.

Change your phone number. Move. There's nothing you can do for your sister. (right now)

This. People have to want help--and not the financial kind. They need to want to change before anything you do will matter.

Disclaimer: It's a brutal perspective.

While I admire your "defense" of your sister, Dub, the problems she is in are based on her choices. Nothing's going to change while you and your family enable her in this messed up marriage. If she married the baffoon, and continues to stay married to the baffoon; then your sister is, indeed, a baffoon.

I say this from a great deal of first-hand experience with family members which I could go on for days about. I realize that "help" sounds like a great word and you feel better for it; however, in my experience it smells and acts a whole lot like "enabling". That, my friend, is a bitch to remedy.

This too.

This as well. Las Vegas is not a nice town, period. You have Henderson, and areas similar that aren't bad at all. I lived in Henderson for a year. Gated community, nice area, except the neighbor kid shot his friend when they were high and skipping school one day. It is just a different environment out there and I can't understand why if you didn't have a great career there or you weren't retired, why you would want to live there for any positive reasons. Meth, gambling, and crime in general aren't favorable for someone on hard times.

Normally I'd agree that Vegas isn't the best place to pull yourself out of financial ruin but she does have a good job with 18 years in. It's not that she doesn't make enough money to support herself well, it's the wasteful spending that has killed her, mostly on buffoon's part. For example, once my mother went to help out, she was cooking a nice dinner for them and buffoon goes out to pick up his daughter from school and on the way home they stop and eat at McDonalds. He's the type that if you give him 20 bucks to go to the store for milk he'll come home without any change because besides milk he'll buy beer, beef jerky... Sort of like the scene from Dumb and Dumber where Jim Carey goes on a beer run with the last of their dough and ends up buying a bunch of useless shit.
I don't know why she stays in him or what she sees in him. She mentioned once that she wanted her daughters to have a father. She knows he's screwed up but she keeps hoping he'll change. I've done some research to try to help her get money from the people that gipped her but she's on her own financially.

The employment thread made me remember this and I have a quick update. My sister got in her 20 years with the union and they packed up and left Vegas. They're currently living near his mother and he just got a job setting up delineators around construction zones on the freeway complete with his own shiny orange helmet, vest and flag. I know it sounds like I'm making a joke but I was surprised by how well that pays. Anyway, we're all pumped, after some difficult times things seem to be improving for them. We're all just hoping that it will keep getting better.
