Joe Torre (official thread)
Wow - the Yankees have to learn to treat people better. I will hate to see Posada or Rivera leave because of this...
I have heard a lot more people mentioned as leaving than those two, even Jeter has been rumored about.

Those two have made explicit Torre comments, thats why I mentioned them. Rodriguez has only made vague comments around Torre and Jeter would never say anything publically. But you're right, anythign could happen now. The only situation that I coud see improving is with Cano - he and Torre didnt seem to get along all the time.

wow...looking at the proposed offer

Joe Torre was in line to make 8 million dollars had the Yankees won the World Series. Even the base salary of 5 million is pretty absurd. I like that Joe turned it down, it sends a message to Steinbrenner that no one else had ever tried to send.

That is, if Steinbrenner (Sr.) is lucid enough to get the message... :shake:

The 2nd highest manager salary for 2007 was $3.5M -- $5M with incentives going up to 8 is still pretty good for managing baseball.

Jmo but Cano is one I don't think they would want to get rid of, but then again that's what I thought about Soriano. Man was I wrong about that.

I think they will try to keep as many of the young stars as possible, especially if Posada and Rivera leave.

If you start with:
Cano
Cabrera
Joba
Kennedy
Ramirez (maybe?)
Molina
Wang
Phillips
Ohlendorf (personal addition)
and factor in that Jeter will probably stay, probably Matsui and/or Damon as well... thats a good nucleus to build around. Who knows what A-Rod/Boras will do. Nothing that happens will suprise me with that situation.

Not only the ones mentioned above but Pettite and Clemons for sure and maybe Arod .
But the Yankees aren't fooling anyone, they made him an offer they knew he would turn down then broke the story first so they wouldn't get as much blame for firing him. They way they did it, it looks like he turned them down when they had no intention of wanting him to stay.

I totally agree. I'm not really sure it was totally a money decision on Torre's part. It could have been more of a case of Torre being 67 years old and not just wanting to put up with Steinbrenner's shit any more.

Baseball notebook: Contract offer a sign to Torre he's not wanted

Saturday, October 20, 2007 3:28 AM

ASSOCIATED PRESS
Joe Torre knew they didn't want him back.
Even in those final few moments, as he sat in George Steinbrenner's office in Tampa, Fla., and listened to the New York Yankees' offer, he hoped there was a way he could stay as manager.
But when the team submitted a one-year contract with a hefty pay cut, performance-based bonuses -- and no room to negotiate -- Torre was insulted and figured he had no choice but to walk away.
"The fact that somebody is reducing your salary is just telling me they're not satisfied with what you're doing," Torre said yesterday at a packed news conference in Rye Brook, N.Y. "There really was no negotiation involved. I was hoping there would be, but there wasn't."

Dodgers may replace Little with Torre as manager

For a kid who grew up in Brooklyn, maybe it's a perfect fit.
Multiple media reports late Monday night said that former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre could replace Grady Little as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney that the Dodgers are expected to fire Little.
Sources close to the situation told Olney on Monday afternoon that the Dodgers had maintained contact with Joe Girardi in the hope that his negotiations with the Yankees would fall apart and they could try to hire him.
