Pirates tidbits (2011)

Pirates enter the break 1 game behind 1st place. If the pitching continues to hold, I don't see why this team can't continue this for the 2nd half of the season. It's nice to see after all these years a Pirates actually playing good baseball. :pirate2:

I was at PNC today and it was nice to see the atmosphere in the place like I haven't seen there in the past. Beating the Cubs 9-1 to take the series was pretty cool, too.

It's been 19 years since I've seen this so I'm taking a snapshot of it. :pirate1:

Bucs 1
Reds 0

Still in first place. :pirate2:

I don't know how these pitchers got so much better in a year but I'm enjoying the ride. Sure hope Pedro Alvarez can come back in August and hit like he did in August and September last year. If that happens and the pitching holds up this could be a crazy season in Pittsburgh.

A ridiculous throwing error to start the game sets up one run then a walk (and questionable safe call on steal) sets up another in the second. Looking like the 2010 keystone kops so far today. With Cueto on the mound for Cinci this one could be getting away from the Pirates early.

Have no fear. Our band of idiots can fuck up a wet dream.

FA signings like Lyle Overbay are just a waste of money and a roster spot. :ohwell:

Four months later, let's take a look:

.239 AVE

.308 OBP

.362 SLG

Conclusion? Bum, just like I thought. Fucker can't even advance a runner to third with a ground out.

I like Chase d'Arnaud but his OBP is now below .300 and his second error today brings his total to 7 in about a month's worth of games. His first error cost the Bucs a run and the second one just did, too. Not to mention the extra pitches Karstens has had to throw. :shake:

Yep, he's a liability out there--his two errors have led to two Reds' runs, the difference right now in a 3-1 game. Oh yeah, he's also batting a whopping .218. :roll1:

Two unearned runs lead to a 3-1 loss. Karstens pitched well again, but the bats have got to improve if the winning record is to continue. Taking 2 out of 3 while scoring only 4 runs is not going to happen often.

He shows plenty of promise but needs to go back to AAA and work on defense and plate discipline. Cedeno will likely be back up soon. He's not great, but he was doing better than that.

Ten games in 10 days versus the Cardinals, Braves and Phillies are likely to indicate whether the Bucs continue their improbable run or begin fading back to the curve.

All three games at PNC this weekend are sold out. So much for the notion Pittsburgh won't support baseball. Give 'em a competitive team and they'll come out.

Buccos get 1 vs. the Cardinals and remain tied for 1st at the end of this first set of big series.

National TV vs. the Braves on E!SPN's Monday Night Baseball tomorrow.
