Its good to see Troy doing well in the league.

The way his career has been going I see this situation happen to him. Singletary gets fired and the 49ers bring in Harbaugh. Harbaugh hold a grudge against Troy because of all the times Troy beat down Michigan. Harbaugh brings "his guy"(maybe Andrew Luck) in to play QB. Troy sits on the bench again.

I don't think Harbaugh will be holding any grudges. I have a feeling he'd have a lot of respect for Troy based on his performance against Michigan.

Harbaugh will likely play who he thinks gives the team the best chance to win. Hopefully it's Troy, we'll see.

I agree, In the NFL they don't care what school you went to. It is all about winning and what have you done for me for in your last game. It is no secret that if the coaches don't put up the Ws (i.e. wins) they'll get the boot real quick. Look at all the former head coaches that are currently unemployeed (and a few have even won a Super Bowl).

Actually, I think it is a homer thing. There wouldn't be a big debate over Troy Smith "getting screwed" if he was a graduate of South Florida, so let's be honest about it.

Kyle Boller and Alex Smith were first round picks in the NFL draft. Troy Smith was the last pick of the fifth round. Whether we like it or not, the league wide perception of Boller and Alex was much higher than Troy, and they are going to get more chances than Troy. To expect equal treatment is either naive or that homer thing, again.

No one said life is fair. I love our Troy but he's not going to get the benefit of the doubt given his draft status. He must produce quickly or he'll be set aside. That, unfortunately, has been the case.

I hope he gets another chance.

Well, yeah, it's a homer thing that we give a shit about Troy vs. some other fifth round pick that might not be getting a shot that we don't even know exists, but it's still stupid-ass Vietnam War syndrome for an NFL coach/GM to dig the hole of a proven high pick draft bust deeper by continuing to play him over a guy who MIGHT be able to play, and that's what I find annoying. Sure, I wouldn't care if it wasn't Troy, but I don't think that precludes me from rather objectively calling what's been done stupid as it pertains to Boller and A. Smith.

It'll be interesting how Troy does with a competent coach and an offseason to learn the system. Not only does he know what to do with a QB, but he can surround Troy with better players, or at least get the current players to perform better.

I don't like Troy's chances. Hopefully he retains his spot as back-up QB there. Jim will certainly get a good scouting report from his brother John who had him for 2 years.

Niners G.M. says quarterback of the future isn?t presently on the roster

In a comment that many 49ers fans will greet with an overwhelming sense of relief, G.M. Trent Baalke said during Tuesday?s edition of ProFootballTalk Live that the team?s quarterback of the future isn?t a member of the team at the present time.

?Is the quarterback of the future on this roster?? Baalke said. ?I think it?s obvious that he isn?t at this point.?

Baalke said that the team will address the quarterback position either through the draft, the trade market, or free agency.

The only problem, as we?ll point out in an upcoming 10-pack focused solely on the labor situation, is that a lockout would leave only the draft as the device available until the labor situation is resolved.

Either way, Alex Smith, David Carr, Troy Smith, and Nate Davis should start thinking about their own futures in a city other than San Francisco.

i Don't see troy getting booted from san fran, he won some games and played well, but also did poorly in some. He'll end up as the back up again, if he decides to stay i think. JH seems like the kind of coach that would like a mobile backup

The 49ers have 50 million reasons - 49.5 million to be exact - to give Alex Smith every opportunity to succeed. They have no such investment in any other QB, and the fact is Troy had two good starts but got progressively worse with each successive start. Go look at his numbers. You won't last in the NFL completing less than 50% of your passes and throwing as many picks as TDs.

Troy had a shot and didn't play well enough to keep the 50 million dollar investment on the bench. I hope he gets another shot and takes full advantage of it but until then the unfortunate reality is he hasn't done enough to be given the benefit of the doubt given his draft status. That's the business of the NFL.

I'm not saying that you think like that... but the fact of the matter is so many teams are run like that and it really doesn't make any sense. Odds are that the payout ain't gonna happen... cut rope, don't hold it.

Coach Jim Harbaugh has not publicly closed the door on the potential returns of any 49ers free agents. But circumstantial evidence suggests quarterback Troy Smith and running back Brian Westbrook will not return to the club.

Harbaugh has not shied away from heaping praise on scheduled free agent quarterback Alex Smith. But, then, when I asked Harbaugh last week about his thoughts on Troy Smith, this is what he had to say:

"Like everybody, I don't want to get into each specific guy. But that's also my job to evaluate the same with everybody."

Harbaugh always cites "accuracy" high on the list of attributes he wants from his quarterback. Troy Smith completed 50.3-percent of his passes. Also, Harbaugh's brother, John, released Troy Smith prior to the start of the regular season last year and decided to stick with just two quarterbacks (Joe Flacco and Marc Bulger) on his Baltimore Ravens roster.

At the combine: Bad sign for Troy Smith

From the sounds of it, former Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith might be on the verge of being rejected by two Harbaughs in less than a year.

Smith, the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner, was released by the Baltimore Ravens and coach John Harbaugh prior to the 2010 season.

He signed with San Francisco and started six games for the Niners last year, throwing for 1,176 yards with 5 TDs and 4 INTs. He also rushed for 121 yards and a TD.

But he now is an unrestricted free agent. And newly hired San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh is not believed to want him back.

Today at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Jim Harbaugh was asked the following question:

"How much thought have you put into the team's quarterback situation, with Alex Smith, Troy Smith, or through the draft or free agency?"

Here's his answer:

"(I've been) thinking about it a lot. . . .and the ways that you mentioned are the ways to address the situation. There's one quarterback that?s on our roster, that's David Carr. You mentioned Alex Smith, he's an unrestricted free agent, so he has some decisions to make. too.

"And then you evaluate the free agents, evaluate the trade paths, the draft. Those are all the options."

No mention of Troy. The issue reportedly is accuracy. In 20 career games over four years, Smith is a career 51.7-percent passer.
