The Polls (AP, Coaches, & CFP, etc.)

If one were being logical, in a scenario where a potential #4 seed lost to the #1 seed by 28, shouldn’t the criteria for other teams vying for that last spot be “is it possible that this team can hang within four touchdowns of the other playoff teams”?

Seems like a preseason top three team that beat every team put in front of them handily outside of the #12 team in the country (which itself is a joke) may be able to do better than Aggie in the playoffs.

But logic doesn’t equal ratings.

The TXAM/Florida rankings are the perfect example of the circular logic of ranking SEC teams: this team beat the #6 team, while this team just barely lost to the #5 team, so they must both be great!

Or maaaaybeeee...
Well I believe by definition (at least by some) being an SEC team automatically qualifies as "Great." And don't forget the "SEC Speed" thing in there as well.

ESPN playoff predictor updates top 10 entering Week 14

2.) OHIO STATE
10078470.jpg

Record: 4-0.

Make Playoff: 77.9 percent.

Reach National Championship: 45.1 percent.

Win Title: 19.7 percent.

247Sports' Take: Coronavirus issues within Ohio State's program canceled this past Saturday's game at Illinois, putting the Buckeyes on thin ice with a CFB Playoff spot. Ohio State is tracking to play Saturday's noon ET game on ABC at Michigan State (2-3), but the No. 4 Buckeyes likely need to reach a six-game resume for enough CFB Playoff verification. If not, the door opens for a team like Texas A&M, Florida or Cincinnati.

ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum however believes that's a major if given current COVID-19 concerns and the Big Ten should bend its rules a bit. One more cancelation and the Buckeyes are ineligible to appear in the league's final game.

"The ownership is on them right now to adjust, and they have to find a way to get Ohio State playing for a Big Ten Championship," Finebaum said Wednesday on ESPN's Get Up. "That’s going to be critical to the Buckeyes to get into the playoff. There’s a good chance if the Buckeyes miss another game that you’ll get the ACC with two teams and the SEC with two teams, and the Buckeyes are going to be done.

"Remember one thing, and this can be disputed. I’m going to say that the Big Ten came back for one reason, which was supporting Ohio State’s chances of playing for a national championship. And that hangs in the balance right now."

Current BCS Top 10 differs from College Football Playoff

Here's a look at the formula used during the Bowl Championship Series era and how it would look this week compared to the second College Football Playoff rankings:

3. OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (4-0)
9994945.jpg

BCS score: .8896 (Last week: .8861)

CFB Playoff ranking: No. 4

The Buckeyes are still ranked No. 3 according to the computers, but they're one spot behind Clemson in the poll that matters. Last week's cancellation at Illinois wasn't damaging according to the analytics, but pushed the reality of a possible season without a Big Ten Championship appearance to the forefront for Ohio State. If Saturday's game against Michigan State is wiped out or the regular-season finale vs. Michigan, the Buckeyes will be ineligible to appear in the league title game.

Aggy to me this morning: If yall dont play in the Champ game.. yall should play us to “silence the Critics” .... I asked what critics, “the ones that will be complaining that you got into the CFP without winning the league” ... it went on for a while ... I basically said .. the only folks that will be critical are the folks in Nascar land that have a financial stake in the SEC

SMITH THINKS CFP SHOULD PRIORITIZE CONFERENCE TITLES

Smith knows how challenging a job the College Football Playoff selection committee has in selecting which four teams should get the opportunity to play for a national championship, because he was on the selection committee himself in 2017 and 2018. He’s glad he’s not on the committee this year, knowing how much more challenging that job has become in a year where teams aren’t playing the same number of games and are having games canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Man, I can’t imagine what it’s like this year, because you have so much happening with different leagues and different teams and cancellations and things of that nature,” Smith said.

As Smith said on the day the Big Ten announced it would play an abbreviated season beginning in late October, he still believes the eye test will be a bigger factor in determining this year’s field of four than it has been in past years. He has reason to want that to be the case, as that could benefit Ohio State, who currently sits fourth in the CFP rankings.

“I think the eye test probably rises to more importance this year than any time,” Smith said. “There’s 13 great people in the room, they all got football backgrounds and some more than others, and I know we always watch film as a committee, but I’m sure they’re watching even more. And I think that that’s probably what’s provided us an opportunity to stay in the top four, because we are talented, extremely talented, very prolific offensively and our defense is, we’re tough enough, and it’s gonna get better. So I think that that respect for our talent probably has helped us, even though we haven’t played as many games as others. We have a Heisman contender at quarterback, and a number of other athletes who when drafted will be high draft choices.”

Smith also said that he believes conference championships – even though Ohio State still may or may not have the opportunity to play in the Big Ten Championship Game, depending on what happens with the Michigan game next week – should be weighed more heavily this year given that teams have played an uneven number of games.

“In the end, I would hope the championships will take a higher priority than they have in some years previous,” Smith said. “I’ve always been one of those guys that felt like championships matter, regular-season record and championships matter more than anything. And so, we’ll see how it rolls.”
