More Discussion on Marijuana (Merged with Skeete thread discussion)

When numerous surveys show that over half the student populus tokes at least once a year, on campus, I'd say that pretty much qualifies it as a normal part of college life...

Half the population toking at least once a year doesn't make smoking pot normal. Only 27% smoke pot more than once per month. That means 73% don't. Half the population experimenting with pot by smoking at least once per year is normal.

When over 1/4 of the populus smokes the shit on a recurring basis, that's pretty much makes it a normal part of campus life. Maybe not quite to the degree that underage drinking is, but it is indeed a normal part of campus life nonetheless, especially considering the comparative difficulty that pot is to obtain.

Who gives a shit? It's weed........let's talk about the heroin problem in America, which has claimed over 10 people in my home town (which consists of 20,000 people) over the last 6 years.

If you cite a majority of folks who smoked pot in high school or college, most would be simply for the sake of curiosity. It's recreational, but not the hell raising substance that some proclaim it to be. I've been stoned in my day, but I have never had the urge to rob a bank, or beat my wife. Let it be....

That's still a heck of a lot of smokers! At Ohio State alone that's over 10000 students toking up once a month, and I bet most of them would pass for a "normal college student", if there is such a thing.
Frankly fellas this is the one area on which I'd say KevinBuck is on surer, more certain ground. He is also much closer to agreement with Mili.

Social studies are replete with evidence that asking someone to admit to a crime will (not typically, but simply will) result in under-reporting of that crime. Smoking the ganga is a crime. Ergo, ask a group of students if they have partaken of the weed, (even when making clear that there is no likelihood of negative recourse) and you will get a lower than actual participation count.

And gost8 -- while I respect your reporting of the negative impact of reefer smoking on the health of the individual, his or her family, and their offspring I offer this -- tangential, yet relevant response. Tangential, for it does not say, go smoke the devil weed. Relevant, for it is an outgrowth of the legal status of marijuana as a drug. I speak of the difficulties academics encounter when trying to obtain research funds to study in greater depth any of the extremely broad range of chemicals actually found in marijuana. Almost all drugs start at some time as an effort by a chemist to isolate an active ingredient from the soup nature provides. Much of this pioneering work is still conducted in academic institutions. The many different mood altering, and physiomimetic chemicals evidently present in marijuana should be studied in great and continuing depth.

Sadly, due to the criminalization of marijuana this untapped store of models for future medicines remains effectively untouchable. Any grant application for funds to study the pharmacy of cannabis sativa will face overwhelming legal barriers. These are set sufficiently high that they preclude award of funds to even the most prestigious of scientists. It is probably right to set limits on the abuse of a material. It is certainly wrong to outlaw nature. It also unwise and short-sighted for the government to place bureaucratic barriers in the way of discovery by legitimate researchers.

True, but if you see the difference Ritalin makes on kids with ADD or ADHD you'd understand where I don't totally consider it bad.

Had kids go from all F's to C's and B's.
we're way off topic, so I'll just go ahead and address the original comment.

ADD is a bizarre disease, b/c those who do not have it and are just being lazy will often appear the same way as those who truly cannot overcome the disease. Yes people are overmedicated, but that does not remove the validity of the condition for some. The main problem is that it is often handled wrong by quick prescriptions, where careful treatment - not just biochemically but emotionally, socially, etc - is needed with regard to each individual condition.

Bullshit generalization... so you know 2 people and you make this statement... what a crock
haha what? i said times have changed, "i guess" dont pick and choose what you want to read. I never said 2, i said many, and there were many more than 2, infact the number was closer to 10 and that was just the crowd i hung out with, which were athletes. At Watterson, the majority smoked pot, and the thing there was quickly becoming coke, so it seemed with thew people i knew, which was alot more than 2, or 10. I didnt mean to generalize everyone, and I know not everyone smokes pot on campus, all i'm saying is that its not hard to balance out school, atheltics, being a good person and smoking some pot on the side or dealing it to make some quick cash.

You hit the nail on the head JWins, it's alarming, and frankly, disappointing.
LMAO... so i take it you don't teach history? you would be very 'alarmed' and 'disappointed' to learn that in many cultures, the young people ritually take drugs at the outset of adulthood.

like or not, kids taking drugs, especially of the cannabis and psylocybin variety, is a rite of passage in the western hemisphere.

I am aware in other cultures like New Guinea and others that this is a rite of passage.

I wasn't speaking of those if you read correctly, I was talking about the athletes and scholars that many teachers and kids fawn over who actually have this character weakness.

Nothing like seeing the Honor Society and star athlete on their Xanga site smoking weed and drinking beer.

Anyhow, back on topic, I was worried about kicking even more than Defense this coming year and hope that Skeete gets things back together and gives the scholarship players a run for their money.
